Job Summary:
The Diener assists the Pathologist in all duties related to, preparing for, conducting and following an autopsy. The Diener also assists in the Pathology Department with daily routine tasks as needed.
- Positively identifies body, accessions autopsy case into laboratory information system and/or logs and prepares autopsy room. Adheres to ethical standards for treatment of the body. Ensures compliance with post-mortem dis-infection procedures.
- Assists the Pathologist, Pathologists' Assistant and/or Resident in the autopsy. Provides traction during organ removal and, if required, removal of brain, complete evisceration, and/or other special techniques.
- Prepares body following the autopsy by cleaning, drying, suturing autopsy incision, identifying arteries for the funeral director and informing medical records of availability of body so that it may be released to the funeral director. Ensures that the medical record of the deceased is returned to Medical Records within 48 hours of the performance of the autopsy.
- Ensures that instruments and supplies are available for pathologist to conduct an autopsy. Orders supplies and stocks solutions and scrubs needed for anatomic pathology services. Maintains and monitor's inventory. Adheres to federal mandate for the use of alcohol. Delivers alcohol and documents appropriately.
Qualifications
- High school Diploma or equivalent
- Two (2) years' experience in autopsy dissection required
- Must have excellent word processing, medical terminology and be able to read, speak and write the English language.
