POSITION GOAL

Under general supervision of the public health supervising dentist, the Health Alliance Substitute Dental Hygienist will provide direct services to the I-Smile and I-Smile @ School programs in Linn, Benton and Jones Counties. In addition, the Substitute Dental Hygienist may provide dental outreach activities within the communities served. 

 

SCHEDULE AND WAGE

Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm (Intermittent Hours). $36.68 per hour.

*This position is eligible for a $1200 retention incentive after successfully completing 180 days of employment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform direct services within the scope of practice for a licensed dental hygienist, including, but not limited to, oral assessment and screening, fluoride varnish, silver diamine fluoride and/or sealant application, oral hygiene instruction, and nutrition-dental counseling.
  2. Act upon assistance/guidance from the state Oral Health staff, the CSA’s I-Smile Coordinator.
  3. Provide services as specified in the written Public Health Supervision Agreement and under the protocols specified in the agreement.
  4. Refer clients to area dentists for dental treatment and to establish ongoing dental homes.
  5. Document dental findings and preventive treatments.
  6. Develop and conduct oral health education programs for individual patients and community groups.
  7. Follow Maternal/Child and Adolescent Health (MCAH) protocols for dental assessment and education.
  8. Conduct follow-up contacts and dental care coordination with clients and/or parents.
  9. Serve as a mandatory reporter to the Department of Human Services (DHS).
  10. Participate in work-related meetings, training, and conferences as available.
  11. Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with HACAP policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  12. Serve as an oral health representative to the public – provide program information to interested professionals, outside agencies, organizations, and individuals.
  13. Attend various community activities in which oral health is involved.
  14. Actively improve professional growth through continuing education, involvement in professional organizations and scholarly activities.
  15. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication abilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  1. Principles, techniques, terminology, and practices of dental health, and preventative clinical services
  2. Development of pediatric and adult dentition
  3. Dental procedures, principles of infection control, infection control procedures, instruments, equipment, and supplies
  4. Methods and outreach used in health education
  5. HIPAA, OSHA, CDC, and IDB regulations
  6. English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and vocabulary

 

Ability to:

  1. Collect data, keep accurate records, and prepare specialized reports
  2. Apply State or Federal standards as they relate to programs
  3. Interpret, apply, and articulate departmental policies and procedures
  4. Interact effectively with persons representing widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view
  5. Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and competing priorities
  6. Be detail-oriented and accurate while performing duties
  7. Use a computer for the purposes data entry, spreadsheets, presentations, word processing, email and Internet
  8. Handle low to moderate levels of stress, meet deadlines and solve problems appropriate to the position
  9. Follow oral and written instructions
  10. Organize and present facts, ideas, and opinions clearly and concisely, orally and in writing

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Required

  1. Associate’s degree in dental hygiene from an accredited dental hygiene program.
  2. Licensed as a Registered Dental Hygienist in the State of Iowa.
  3. One year of dental hygiene clinical experience in private practice, schools, hospitals, or community/public health settings.
  4. Ability to obtain a Public Health Supervision Agreement.

Preferred

  1. Three years of dental hygiene clinical experience in private practice, schools, hospitals, or community/public health settings.
  2. Experience with pediatric population

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  1. Receive clearance by the Iowa Department of Human Services on child abuse and criminal records checks upon employment and resubmit/receive clearance every two (2) years.
  2. Complete Child Abuse Reporter training within six (6) months of employment and update every three (3) years.
  3. Complete Bloodborne pathogen training within (10) days of employment and update every year.
  4. Valid driver’s license.
  5. Valid car insurance.
  6. Reliable transportation for on-the-job use.
  7. Maintain required continuing education hours to retain state licensure.
