Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Assistant Dean of Students.
About the Role
The Assistant Dean of Students manages student activities impacting the full university community and facilitates leadership development opportunities for student organization members. This position reports to the Dean of Students and supervises student activities and organizations staff including student worker(s).
Specific duties include the following:
Student Support and Care
- Partner with SSWBB staff and other university offices to cultivate community-building programs for students including community and civic service activities.
- Co-lead the ALL IN-voting initiatives.
- Advise the Hollins Activities Board and Student Government Association.
- Co-manage adjudication of all student conduct violations with the Dean of Students.
- Serve as the lead for the university’s CARE Team in the absence of the Dean of Students using evidenced-based practices and strategies to support student resilience and prevent stop-out by providing follow-up support of students from CARE Team referrals.
- Work with Marketing & Communications and Admission in the development of marketing materials for campus events and programs and communications for student families.
- Work with Institutional Advancement and Enrollment Management in establishing a Parents Council that offers parent panels and sessions throughout the summer and school year.
Student Engagement
- Plan and oversee New Student Orientation programs during fall, spring, and summer in collaboration and/or consultation with First Year Foundations faculty leads, Admission, and other pertinent campus offices.
- Reimagine the current scope of New Student Orientation to support building students’ connections to the university while also laying a foundation that can be built upon for success at Hollins.
- Coordinate community service opportunities for students throughout the year as a means of strengthening institutional relationships within the region while also developing a sense of service responsibility in students.
- Collaborate with the Batten Leadership Institute and other internal or external stakeholders to provide leadership training for student leaders throughout the year.
- Develop assessment tools to measure efficacy and impact of student programming.
- Oversee major university traditions on campus including planning for First Step (in partnership with senior class officers), Tinker Day (in partnership with campus offices), Ring Night (in partnership with senior class officers), Family Weekend (in partnership with campus offices), Sophomore/Senior Banquet (in partnership with sophomore and senior class officers), 100th Night (in partnership with the senior class), and Baccalaureate (in partnership with the University Chaplain and Director of Interfaith Belonging).
- Serve as the faculty/staff advisor for the first-year class.
- Advise the Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society.
- Design annual faculty/staff student clubs/organizations advisor training and expectations.
- Conduct anti-hazing training for Hollins’ recognized selective societies (ADA, FREYA, etc.) in conjunction with the Dean of Students.
- Work with Athletics on student engagement with campus recreation opportunities, including intramural and club sports.
Position Qualifications
Successful applicants must have the following qualifications and experience:
- Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel administration, or related field.
- Minimum of three years of experience with college/university campus activities and/or new student orientation.
- Effective organizational, communication, interpersonal, customer service, and social media skills.
- Demonstrated success working with diverse populations.
- Microsoft Office proficiency.
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Valid United States driver’s license with minimal violations.
Preferred candidates will have experience in a small, private higher education institution.
