JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Pool Manager, the lifeguard is responsible for performing a variety of duties to prepare the pool for the demands of the group present. The lifeguard is responsible for performing the duties as outlined in the analysis. He/she/they works in groups of a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 18 lifeguards. He/she/they is a part-time employee working from 10-38 hours a week. Work shifts are weather dependent. They may be as long as 8 hours, but there are extended breaks within this period. The lifeguard will be hired seasonally from May to September. The H-F Park District’s mission statement is “to enhance the quality of life through diverse recreational opportunities, facilities and parks while caring for the environment”.
The lifeguard is required to participate in a 15 minute daily training session to demonstrate knowledge or ability to perform work activities. This can be verbal or physical and can cover all aspects of any of the described essential functions.
The lifeguard reports directly to the pool manager on duty.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide outstanding customer service to our internal and external guests by providing friendly, responsive, courteous and helpful service.
- Protect the safety of swimmers.
- Keep attention on the swimmers at all times when on duty.
- Enforce all pool rules in the water and on the deck or in locker rooms.
- Perform any necessary emergency procedures and first aid.
- Attend required staff meetings.
- Keep deck and water free of and debris and equipment not being used.
- Set up equipment or put it away, clean locker rooms and keep deck and party area tidy at all times.
- Be willing to substitute for fellow staff members.
- Check safety equipment at the beginning of each shift.
- Carefully complete accident reports after rendering whatever first aid is needed. Remember, with serious accidents, the Recreation Supervisor must be notified.
- Each lifeguard is responsible for fully understanding emergency procedures, pool rules, rescue techniques and minor first aid and will be expected to demonstrate any of these things at any given time.
- Lifeguards will always wear their issued lifeguard staff t-shirt, suit, fanny pack filled with proper PPE, sunglasses, sunscreen and hat along with their whistle while on duty.
- Read and follow the Park District policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by pool manager related to the pool and its operation.
- Perform and maintain all of the required skills and skill tests of their certification.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures as outlined in the Aquatic Safety Manual.
- Other related job duties as assigned.
COGNITIVE SKILLS REQUIRED:
- The lifeguard must be able to follow directions from supervisor and co-workers.
- The lifeguard must be able to give directions to co-workers.
- The lifeguard must use good safety awareness and judgment.
Qualifications
JOB SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Must have or be able to obtain a current CPR/AED/First-Aid Certification.
- Must have or be able to obtain current lifeguard training though StarGuard (current certification through Red Cross or Ellis and Associates is acceptable for crossover training).
- Be able to swim 50 yards without stopping, swim 50 yards with a rescue tube across their chest, tread water for one minute without the use of your hands, and retrieve a 10lb. brick from the bottom of the pool (5ft deep)
- Must be punctual, responsible, honest and trustworthy.
- Must be able to communicate with public and fellow staff in a courteous manner, state rules firmly and diplomatically.
- Represent the Park District in a professional manner in both job and appearance.
- Exercise good personal habits of cleanliness and behavior.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Must be able to obtain a current StarGuard Lifeguard Certification.
- Current certification as a StarGuard lifeguard or comparable certification is strongly preferred.
