Job Summary: The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) with expertise in Microbiology will play a vital role in the clinic by conducting diagnostic tests, analyzing specimens, and supporting patient care through accurate and timely results.
Microbiology Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for microbiology testing as needed
- Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies and ensure timely procurement.
- Ensure compliance with clinical and regulatory guidelines, including CLIA, CAP, and OSHA standards.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Conduct microbiological and general lab testing on clinical specimens to identify pathogens, assess antimicrobial susceptibility, and support diagnosis.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to discuss findings and recommendations.
- Develop protocols for infection prevention and outbreak investigation.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance.
- Ensure the laboratory meets quality assurance and proficiency testing requirements.
- Stay updated on advances in microbiology, including emerging pathogens and diagnostic techniques.
- Prepare reports, summaries, and data for internal and external review.
- Collect, prepare, and label patient samples, specimens, and cultures in accordance with established protocols .
- Perform a wide range of clinical laboratory tests, including blood tests, urine analysis, microbiology, and other diagnostic procedures.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including microscopes, cell counters, and analyzers, ensuring they are in proper working order.
- Maintain and monitor quality control systems to ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results .
- Accurately record and report test results, including abnormal findings, to healthcare providers and maintain precise laboratory records.
- Adhere to safety and infection control policies, laboratory regulations, and industry best practices .
- Identify and address technical issues and irregularities in test results, and troubleshoot equipment problems as needed.
- Monitor and replenish laboratory supplies and reagents to ensure continuous testing capabilities .
- Participate in research projects and contribute to the development of new testing methods or procedures .
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, physicians, and nurses to provide accurate and timely information regarding test results.
- Trains new phlebotomist, technicians, and technologists in conjunction with the Laboratory Supervisor .
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education/Certifications/Licenses
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and/or Microbiology, Biology, or a related field required.
- Certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or an equivalent organization is highly desirable.
- Licensure as required by state regulations.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in clinical laboratory to include microbiology or a related laboratory field.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and electronic health records (EHR).
Required Skills/Abilities
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Proficient in microbiological techniques, including culture, staining, and molecular diagnostics.
- Proficient in core clinical laboratory processes, pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical.
- Excellent communication skills to relay complex findings to non-specialist audiences.
- Proficiency in laboratory safety and biosecurity protocols.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency in computer systems and software relevant to laboratory operations.
