Position Overview :
The Veterinary Care Supervisor is a key leadership role at the Houston Humane Society (HHS). This position supports the Medical Director and Clinic Operations Manager in overseeing the daily operations of both shelter and clinic medical activities. This role ensures the highest standards of animal care, fosters collaboration between the shelter and clinic teams, and provides leadership and support to staff to achieve organizational goals. The role is crucial for ensuring efficient medical operations and maintaining the highest standards of veterinary care. The Veterinary Care Supervisor will also project and uphold a positive and professional image of HHS and its mission to the public.
- Leadership and Supervision : Supervise and coordinate the schedules and duties of shelter and clinic veterinary technicians, animal caretakers, and kennel technicians. Provide consistent leadership, mentoring, and support to all team members. Conduct regular team meetings to ensure clear communication and alignment of goals. Promote a positive collaborative work environment.
- Operational Management : Oversee daily operations in both shelter and clinic settings to ensure efficient workflows and adherence to protocols. Monitor and evaluate the performance of staff, providing constructive feedback and identifying areas for growth. Ensure proper staffing levels for all areas to maintain optimal operations.
- Training and Development : Develop and implement training programs for veterinary technicians, animal caretakers, and kennel technicians to enhance skills and knowledge. Ensure staff are proficient in handling, restraining, and caring for animals in various medical and behavioral conditions. Provide ongoing education on safety protocols, infection control, and animal welfare best practices. - Animal Care Oversight : Ensure that all animals receive appropriate medical and behavioral care in accordance with organizational standards and veterinary recommendations. Collaborate with veterinarians to ensure timely and accurate medical treatments, including pre and post operative care.
- Administrative Duties : Maintain accurate records of animal care, treatments, and procedures. Assist in creating and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for both shelter and clinic operations. Participate in hiring, onboarding, and evaluation staff performance. Address staff concerns and mediate conflicts in a timely and professional manner.
- Collaboration and Communication : Work closely with the Medical Director, Clinic Operations Manager to ensure seamless operations and high-quality care. Act as liaison between departments to address concerns, share updates, and align on organizational goals. Support cross-departments initiatives such as adoption events, spay / neuter clinics, and community outreach programs.
- Manage weekly inventory checks of all controlled substances, ensuring compliance with DEA regulations; report findings to the Medical Director and Clinic Operations Manager.
- Assist with ordering necessary medical and operational supplies.
- Ensure all operations comply with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
- Generate and analyze operational reports to guide management decisions.
- Represent the veterinary department in management meetings and contribute to strategic planning.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support the daily operations and fulfill the mission of the organization.
