What are the responsibilities and job description for the Investigator position at Howard County Government?

The Investigator will conduct and supervise investigations for the Public Defender’s Office as well as collaborate with the Chief Public Defender’s staff to support all Howard County Public Defender operations. The Senior Investigator works under the direct supervision of the Howard County Chief Public Defender.
DUTIES:
Communicate with and provide investigatory services for the Deputy Public Defenders regarding their assigned cases.
Interview PD clients and/or witnesses and take recorded statements as necessary.
Serve subpoenas as required.
Make written reports to Deputy PDs as necessary.
Assist the Administrative Assistant as directed.
Attend meetings as requested by the Chief Public Defender.
Any other duties as directed by the Chief Public Defender.
SKILLS
Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and a knack for gaining information from human sources, including witnesses, defendants, law enforcement personnel and victims.
Must be highly organized and attentive to details to properly keep track of and analyze case files, crime scene evidence, police reports, financial records and others items.
Ability to interact effectively with individuals within the criminal justice environment.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Ability to write reports, and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.
Must utilize various classified computer databases, software and filing systems to prepare cases for trial.
RESPONSIBILITY:

Be knowledgeable of current laws and practices pertaining to the court system and investigative practices.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A High School Diploma or equivalent is required and a college degree in a related subject would be preferred. Substantial law enforcement or investigative experience is required.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Ability to communicate tactfully, both verbally and in writing. Ability to think logically and analyze problems.
