Position Summary

The Medical Assistant is responsible for maintaining good and timely patient flow through the clinic (center or school-based); for maintaining safety standards using protective devices, hand washing, universal precautions and other infection control measures; and for assisting the provider. This position prepares examination rooms for patients keeping the rooms neat, clean and appropriately stocked; cleans instruments and prepares them to be autoclaved, disposes of contaminated supplies, and sets up medical laboratory equipment as required. The Medical Assistant informs providers of the clinical record of communication with patients concerning health matters, verbally and through EHR system and assists providers in maintaining accurate EHR records. This position assists providers in examining and treating patients by handing them instruments and materials or performing tasks as directed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Escorts patient to exam room and assist in determining medical problems
  • Greets patients in a courteous and friendly manner
  • Takes vital signs and assists in patient flow through the clinic

a. Vital signs: blood pressure, temperature, height, weight and BMI

  • Performs Comprehensive Health Assessment: documents immunizations, family/social/cultural characteristics, communication needs, patient/family/medical/mental health/surgical history, advanced care planning, behaviors affecting health, depression screening
  • Administers medications/give injections at direction of provider
  • Responds to and refers incoming calls to RN/provider as deemed appropriate
  • Participates in Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles to improve performance on targeted metrics
  • Prepares exam rooms and instruments for examination and testing

a. List needed clinical supplies and make sure exam rooms are appropriately stocked

b. Schedule pick up dates and times for biological wastes

c. Instruments are sterilized as needed

  • Labels and maintains proper storage for specimens and tests. Delivers tests and obtains results

a. Performs venipuncture, capillary sticks, urinalysis and other CLIA waved tests

b. Places skin tests for TB

c. Orders lab work for in-house labs and Quest Diagnostics; prepare blood work and specimens for pick up

d. Maintains and records temperatures on refrigerators

e. Rotates and checks expiration dates on all medical supplies and in-house medications

  • Ensures that lab reports, x-rays, and other information are in patient charts

a. Filing, faxing and obtaining paperwork for patient care

  • Assists physicians and nurses with minor diagnostic procedures and treatments as directed

a. Pelvic exams, minor procedures and patient education

b. Check voicemail and take messages for providers

  • Issues outpatient materials. Assists in application and patient instruction

a. Fax prescription requests and call in medication for patients

b. Explains patient results and educates on preventative care per provider instruction, via provider action que

c. Fax summary and follow-up forms for patients and give referral information to referral clerk as indicated

  • Attends required meetings, in-services and daily huddles
  • Maintains patient confidentiality

  • Other duties as necessary to ensure successful attainment of SCHC goals and objectives

Job Qualifications and Requirements

  • High School degree/GED required
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant training program
  • CPR/BLS certification required
  • Minimum one-year work experience in a medical setting
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures
  • Knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments and medications as directed
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards
  • Ability to react calmly in emergency situations
  • Ability to read, understand and respond to detailed oral and written instructions and communicate clearly
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Post Acceptance Requirements for Credentialing (some completed after start date): Copy of MA license/certificate, copy of diploma, official transcript of highest degree, driver’s license photocopy, immunization record, immunization consent/declination form, PPD status/TB test results from the last 12 months, BLS certificate, health form, competency form checklist, and fitness for duty form.

  • Work is performed in clinical area and involves contact with patients
  • Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Contact involves dealing with sick persons.
  • Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighting up to 30 pounds
  • Requires normal visual acuity and hearing
  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours
  • Local travel may be required to attend meetings or visit other SCHC clinics

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
