At HudsonWay Immersion School, the English Language Arts(ELA) Teacher/Reading Specialistposition provides ELA with instruction to our 1st to 3rd-grade students, as well as a school-wide literacy specialist. The ideal candidate will have an understanding and commitment to the science of reading and a proven track record of elementary ELA success. Experience in teaching emergent readers, phonics, and writing is required. Certification as a reading specialist and experience with Response to Intervention is preferred.

As an English Language Arts teacher at HudsonWay Immersion School in Stirling, NJ, you will be a specialist, rather than a homeroom teacher. Most of our students’ day is taught in either Mandarin or Spanish by native-speaking teachers. The grade 1-3 ELA teacher has 3 class periods and one additional period for group and individual student support, SEL, or Social Studies.

Major responsibilities:

  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the time designated.
  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs of students i.e. differentiates instruction for children of different linguistic, cultural and academic backgrounds, as well as for children with different learning styles, needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Administers, analyzes, and develops lessons using standardized testing (I-ready) identifying students at risk etc.
  • Conducts parent-teacher conferences two times per year
  • Identifies students who are academically “at risk” and develops plans to support them.
  • Orders ELA materials to support the program.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Employs a variety of instructional strategies, inclusive of immersion techniques, and instructional media, based on the needs/capabilities of the students.
  • Strives to implement by instruction and action our instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assesses the accomplishments, including linguistic benchmarks in the target language, of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Maintains accurate and correct records as required by law, school policy and administrative regulations.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.

Qualifications:

  • English language proficiency - excellent
  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in elementary education required
  • Experience in teaching emergent readers, phonics, and writing is required
  • 3-4 yrs classroom experience with elementary age children
  • Teacher Certification in appropriate subject area preferred
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills necessary
  • Excellent organizational and classroom management skills expected
  • Strong computer skills, and use of technology in classroom
