POSITION SUMMARY

The Animal Care Technician at the Humane Society Waterville Area represents not only the animals in our care, but the organization as a whole. Technicians are responsible for providing top notch customer service and animal care, ensuring that animals become available in a timely manner reducing the average length of stay an animal spends in the shelter setting, enhancing their stay while at the shelter, helping prospective adopters find an animal that best fits their family and lifestyle, the ability to work in an ever changing work environment with flexibility, a positive self-motivating attitude and strong team skills, all while representing the Humane Society Waterville Area (HSWA) and the animals positively in the community. The position must have a willingness and ability to learn safe animal handling is a must.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following

  • Ability to work with animals of all temperaments and sizes
  • Clean and disinfect kennels per cleaning guidelines
  • Provide animals with fresh food and fresh water
  • Interact with animals in a positive humane fashion
  • Practice safe, low stress animal handling
  • Provide dogs with time outside of kennels, cats and pocket pets with enrichment and stimulation, reinforcing positive interactions with people
  • Observe animals for behavioral or health related problems and report them accordingly to the Director of Operations
  • Maintain a clean and healthy environment in all areas of the shelter
  • Assist the Director of Operations with vaccine and medication administration
  • Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts in the shelter environment
  • Be willing to learn Petpoint, the shelter’s online animal care management program
  • Stay current on best practices by watching webinars and being active in monthly trainings
  • Assist with animal transports to appointments and other facilities
  • Be willing to assist the feline team with other duties when necessary
  • Perform any other duties and or tasks as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES)

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; some college experience preferred
  • Prior shelter or veterinary experience preferred
  • Demonstrated ability in oral and written communication skills
  • Access primary worksite that is not handicapped accessible
  • Lift, scoop, bend, twist and walk as part of essential job functions
  • Has reliable means of transportation

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. Potential for exposure to environmental factors such as temperature variations, high noise levels, zoonotic disease, animal waste, hazardous chemicals or chemical materials requiring OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets, anesthetics, sharp objects and potential hostile persons and/or dangerous and fractious animals.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
