Description

Provides basic nursing care to patients in the medical-surgical, telemetry, intensive care and pediatric unit according to established standards and practices. Functions under the direct supervision of a professional nurse.

Position Designation:

The position of Certified Nursing Assistant/Medical-Surgical is identified as “department safety-sensitive”.

Department safety-sensitive positions mean employment positions which may in the normal course of business:

1. Require the employee to operate the company vehicles or heavy equipment, or

1. Involves duties, which, if performed with inattentiveness, errors in judgment, or diminished coordination, dexterity, or composure, may result in mistakes that could present a real and/or imminent threat to the personal health and safety of the employee, co-worker, and/or the public.

Delegation of Authority:

As a Certified Nursing Assistant/Medical-Surgical, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.            Provides for patient’s personal hygiene ( a.m. and h.s. care):  gives bedpans, urinals,

                baths, backrubs, shampoos, shaves, oral care, showers, etc.                                                                         E   M   B

2.            Provides for ADLs:  assists with meals and feeds patients, ambulates, turns and

                positions patients, provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.                                            E   M   B

3.            Competently takes vital signs on adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients.                                                 E   M   B

4.            Performs competently during emergency, busy or otherwise stressful situations

                in the department.                                                                                                                                                         E   M   B

5.            Competently performs nursing aide procedures and patient care under the direction

                of a licensed professional nurse.                                                                                                                                E   M   B

6.            Prepares patient rooms for admission.                                                                                                                   E   M   B

7.            Utilizes techniques of infection control, including proper hand washing and

                handling of linen, according to standard precautions.                                                                                      E   M   B

8.            Promptly answers patient call lights and requests.                                                                                            E   M   B

9.            Consistently obtains patient weights on admission and as ordered.                                                           E   M   B

10.          Collects specimens as requested.                                                                                                                             E   M   B

11.          Communicates pertinent information regarding changes in patient condition to

                the responsible RN/LPN.                                                                                                                                               E   M   B

12.          Consistently functions within scope of certification.                                                                                          E   M   B

13.          Completes patient charges appropriately.                                                                                                             E   M   B

14.          Records all entries on flow sheets, notes and charts in an informative and

15.          Demonstrates skill and accuracy in hospital computer application.                                                             E   M   B

16.          Documents patient care and procedures/interventions accurately and thoroughly

19.          Supports the department by attending, and constructively contributing to

20.          Responsible for informing nurse manager of nursing activities, needs, problems,

21.          Participates in stocking, sorting, and inventory of departmental supplies to

                ensure appropriate items are readily available for patient care needs.                                                     E   M   B

22.          Maintains a clean, organized and safe working environment in both patient care

23.          As a member of the health team, maintains harmonious relationship with unit

                and co-workers providing support and assistance to co-workers to ensure quality

Qualifications

Preferred Minimum Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Successful completion of certified nursing assistant course or equivalent

Required Licensure/Certification:

Active Nevada CNA certificate

Current BLS certification
