Overview
Performs non-technical tasks relevant to the daily operation of the Pathology department such as transcription, filing, reception, report processing, as well as frequent interaction with others within the hospital, physicians’ offices, other healthcare professionals, reference laboratories, and vendors. Regularly handles shipments to and returns from outside specialty laboratories. Includes general office duties such as typing, filing, inventory, etc.
Responsibilities
- Transcribe dictated pathology reports suitable for issue to the patient’s medical record.
- Provide administrative support to pathologists and other staff including scheduling and maintaining each calendar of appointments and meetings.
- Complete travel requests as needed, collect, sort, open, and distribute mail, screen telephone calls, prepare correspondence, and resolve routine inquiries.
- Prepare requisitions, tissue, slides, blocks, etc., for shipping to specialty laboratories for additional testing and manage the receipt of those materials when returned.
- Perform other commonly required clerical tasks to support the effective workflow and operation of the department.
- Work with staff and leadership in the general laboratory as needed to promote cohesiveness between the anatomic pathology and clinical laboratory teams.
Qualifications
Education:
HS/GED with some college preferred.
Experience:
Up to three years of experience in a clerical or managerial role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
Additional Skills/Abilities:
- Must be able to transcribe dictation error-free.
- Proficient in use of Microsoft Word, e-mail, copier, fax machine, and miscellaneous audio-visual equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, by telephone, and in written communications.
- Working knowledge of English grammar and basic mathematical skills.
- Ability to type 35-50 wpm and have a working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy.
- Other general office skills as needed.
