An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) RN provides specialized care for patients with severe, life-threatening conditions requiring constant monitoring, advanced interventions, and critical decision-making. RNs in the ICU manage patients who are experiencing acute or life-threatening illnesses, injuries, or complications, such as respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, or multi-organ failure. The role involves close collaboration with doctors, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-level, patient-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Critical Patient Monitoring and Assessment:
  • Continuously assess the physical and emotional status of critically ill patients, including monitoring vital signs, laboratory results, and neurological status.
  • Use advanced equipment such as ventilators, cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, and dialysis machines to track patient health.
  • Recognize and respond to changes in patient conditions, making real-time decisions to adjust care plans or alerting physicians for interventions.
  • Administering Treatments and Medications:
  • Administer prescribed medications (IV, oral, or injectable) and perform other treatments as ordered, ensuring accurate dosage and timing.
  • Initiate and manage intravenous (IV) lines, arterial lines, central lines, and other advanced therapies, such as sedation, pain management, and paralytics.
  • Coordinate the administration of blood products, TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition), and other specialized treatments.
  • Ventilator and Respiratory Support:
  • Monitor and manage mechanical ventilation, adjusting settings as prescribed and ensuring proper functioning.
  • Perform regular suctioning, provide respiratory therapy treatments, and assist in weaning protocols for patients on ventilators.
  • Administer oxygen and medications for respiratory support and assist with intubation or extubation when required.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Team:
  • Work closely with ICU physicians, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement care plans.
  • Participate in daily rounds to discuss patient progress and adjust treatment strategies as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with the healthcare team, ensuring that any changes in patient condition are documented and acted upon promptly.
  • Patient and Family Education:
  • Provide emotional support to patients and families, explaining medical procedures and what to expect during treatment and recovery.
  • Educate families on the patient’s condition, treatment options, and any required follow-up care or lifestyle changes after discharge.
  • Assist in end-of-life care decisions, offering compassion and support during critical or palliative care situations.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records of patient assessments, interventions, responses to treatments, and any changes in patient status.
  • Document care plans, progress notes, and communication with other team members in the medical records system.
  • Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and hospital-specific standards for documentation and patient care.
  • Infection Control and Safety:
  • Follow strict infection control protocols, including hand hygiene, aseptic technique, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Monitor patients for signs of infection, ensuring timely administration of antibiotics or other therapies as needed.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities to ensure patient safety and high standards of care.
  • Crisis Management and Emergency Response:
  • Respond rapidly to emergency situations, such as code blues (cardiac arrest), respiratory distress, or other life-threatening conditions.
  • Administer CPR, defibrillation, or other resuscitation measures when necessary, following advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) protocols.
  • Provide leadership and direction to other staff members during emergencies, ensuring prompt and coordinated action.
  • Leadership and Education:
  • Provide mentorship and support to less experienced nursing staff, sharing expertise in critical care nursing practices.
  • Stay updated on best practices, new technologies, and advancements in critical care through ongoing education and professional development.
  • Participate in departmental training and hospital-wide initiatives to improve patient care and outcomes.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) from an accredited nursing program.
  • Licensing:
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of employment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required (or willingness to obtain).
  • Experience:
  • Prior experience in an ICU, emergency room, or other high-acuity care setting is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, and invasive line management is highly desirable.
  • Skills:
  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations and make quick, informed decisions.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of advanced critical care equipment and technology.
  • Ability to manage complex patient care, prioritize tasks, and handle emergency situations.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and move patients as needed.
  • Ability to stand for long periods and perform physically demanding tasks, such as moving equipment and patients.
  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Pay: $2,300.00 - $2,400.00 per week
