ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
Under the joint supervision of the Principal and the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds
STATEMENT OF POSITION:
Head Custodians provide daily custodial operations, maintaining a sanitary and safe facility for students, employees and the public; ensure that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner; provide direction and support to custodians in the performance of their assignments; and monitor the use of facilities and equipment to protect building property.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be able to assume the responsibilities and perform the duties as described below:
- Receive job assignments from the Principal and Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds and carry out the orders or cause them to be carried out.
- Coordinate the custodial staff and lead workers with respect to cleaning techniques and proper use of equipment and supplies.
- Conduct ongoing inspections to ensure the building and site is suitable for safe operation, maintained at a high level of cleanliness and identify necessary repairs.
- Move and adjust chairs, desks, tables, supplies, furniture and equipment.
- Receive deliveries and distribute to appropriate areas.
- Perform routine cleaning duties in areas to which assigned including but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, dusting, scrubbing, waxing, polishing, washing, vacuuming, cleaning up biological spills and emptying waste containers. Ensure that the flag is raised and lowered daily.
- Monitor and ensure that restrooms are clean and sanitized at all times.
- Assure exterior and interior windows are cleaned on a routine basis.
- Provide snow removal by shoveling, using snow removal equipment and spreading de-icing material as needed to augment the maintenance effort.
- Mow, trim and keep the grounds free of litter at all times.
- Operate and care for the heating/ventilating systems and all custodial and grounds equipment.
- Provide light maintenance duties as needed including but not limited to: ability to use an electrical multimeter/amprobe, replace electrical devices, i.e., single pole, 3-way, 4-way switches, receptacles, ballasts and lamps in all parts of the building; replace drive belts, filters, faucet seats, washers and flushometer parts.
- Complete work order requests, when appropriate and assist the maintenance staff with projects for the building as the need arises.
- On-call for emergencies and weather related problems.
- Instruct custodial staff on how to respond to system failures and follow shutoff procedures for water, fire sprinklers, gas and electric.
- Provide daily operation of the energy management system and support for the school district energy management program.
- Organize and maintain files for the building including blueprints, manuals, contracts, warranties and other pertinent information relative to building operation and maintenance.
- Schedule and document, as per contract, necessary overtime to properly staff the building for use of the facilities by district or outside organizations.
- Prepare the building and provide custodial support to all organizations granted permission for building use.
- Identify, schedule and perform work during the summer, winter and any break during the school year that normally cannot be completed when students are in the building.
- Such other duties as may from time to time be assigned.
PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of custodial supplies and equipment and appropriate use of cleaning products.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, students, parents, community and others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately.
- Ability to understand written and oral instructions and describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems.
- Ability to work in an environment that may have frequent interruptions.
- Ability to exercise initiative and make independent decisions to reschedule work to meet deadlines and to effectively handle emergency work.
- Project a positive image of the school district with his/her team.
EDUCATION AND REQUIRED SKILLS:
- High school diploma or other equivalent (i.e. GED, college, technical or trade school, etc.)
- Prior custodian experience.
- Ability to use computer technology for email and operation of energy management system.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.
- Clearances will be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those requirements that must be met by a Head Custodian to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
- Standing or walking for extended periods of time.
- Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, reaching, pushing and grasping.
- Frequent carrying – up to 60 lbs.
- Infrequent carrying – up to 100 lbs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: This position requires the ability to work in all elements.
