If you are a friendly, outgoing individual that has a passion for volunteer engagement and conservation alike - this is an opportunity you don't want to miss! The Indianapolis Zoo's Volunteer Services Office is currently searching for a Manager of Volunteer Services to join our team.
This position provides direction, coordination and consultation for all volunteer engagement within the organization (includes Adult, Zoo Teens, Interns, groups and temporary volunteers). This role is responsible for planning, developing, and managing all aspects of volunteerism best practices so that the organization will derive full benefit from the resources available. The Indianapolis Zoo's Volunteer Services Department's effectiveness is contingent upon maintaining effective partnerships with all the departments of the Zoo.
Ideal candidates are committed to the Zoo's mission to protect nature and inspire people to care for our world. The successful candidate will have a minimum of three to five (3-5) years' experience with involvement in supervision or volunteer management, preferably in a similar organization. An associate's degree required, four (4) year degree from an accredited institution preferred, with a major in the behavioral sciences, business management, communications or related field is required.
This is a paid, full-time, 40 hours per week, position with a typical schedule of Monday- Friday, weekend and evening hours will apply due to season/ program/ event demands. Overtime is required for large organization events such as Zoobilation and the Indianapolis Prize Gala.
Requirements and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Demonstrated commitment to volunteerism, which could include actual experience as a volunteer.
- Participation in volunteer management workshops/training seminars, whether at the local or national level.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas verbally and in writing.
- Evaluates the need for volunteers within the organization in conjunction with requesting departments. Annually assesses volunteer needs and Zoo priorities.
- Recruits, interviews, selects, and places volunteers to meet organization's needs and mission.
- Develops and supervises volunteer orientation, training, and evaluation to insure consistent, high-quality service to the organization.
- Directs the development of recruitment materials, volunteer handbook, and other materials which contain policies, procedures. Reviews materials annually with Director of Human Resources.
- Prepares and administers Volunteer Services annual budget and reviews with the Director of Human Resources.
- Develops job descriptions and standard operating procedures to ensure appropriate staff support.
- Leads the development of appropriate recognition, retention, and motivation programs for volunteers.
- Demonstrates firsthand knowledge of volunteer opportunities at the Zoo. Meets regularly with staff Liaisons in each department which utilizes volunteers.
- Organizes and maintains appropriate confidential volunteer records (electronic and paper) and reports statistical information for Zoo management on a monthly basis.
- Partners with the Public Events team to ensure there is volunteer coverage, training, supervision and recognition for multi-day events including XZOOberance, ZooBoo and Christmas at the Zoo.
- Partners with the Institutional Advancement and Indianapolis Prize teams to ensure there is volunteer coverage, training, supervision and recognition for black tie events including the Elegant Vintages Wine Auction, Zoobilation, and Indianapolis Prize Gala.
- Serves as a consultant to administration and other departments in areas relating to volunteerism.
- Demonstrates a continued interest in and knowledge of volunteer management by staying informed of current trends and participating in the Central Indiana Association of
- Volunteer Administration (CIAVA) and Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Volunteer Management Committee (VMC).
- Repetitive motion and exposure to office computer systems; must have the ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery such as but limited to, computer printer, scanner, copy machine, and calculator.
- Predominantly indoor environmental conditions, although there is some exposure to outdoor environmental conditions, which include inclement weather, cold and hot temperatures, and humidity.
