What are the responsibilities and job description for the Trainer position at Industries of the Blind?
Summary of Position: To help provide coaching, training, and education to blind/sighted associates to successfully perform all sewing and other manufacturing operations as assigned. Be able to identify employees who are good candidates for cross training and increase their skills and abilities.
Job Responsibilities
- Teach/train sewing and manufacturing skills
- Identify best techniques to implement while training of diverse population
- Evaluate and complete a sewing evaluation and form for each candidate during the pre-hire process
- Evaluate quality, efficiency, and production rates of trainees when learning a new role.
- Complete training records and document progress, productivity and proficiency and provide feedback to the supervisor.
- Fill in for employees when absent to ensure production levels are maintained
- Make samples based on patterns provided by the government ensuring they meet contract specifications.
- Understand production goals, proper sewing techniques, quality and speed
- Conduct training audits to identify training gaps while monitoring the work of newly trained employees and provide retraining to correct deficiencies
- Attend and participate in sensitivity training
- Train team members on various processes and procedures to assemble our products by demonstrating equipment configuration and operation while explaining basic troubleshooting procedures
- Follow all safety guidelines
Job Requirements:
- 5 years of sewing experience, preferably in manufacturing
- Experience in training, coaching, mentoring trainees
- Able to read a ruler
- Able to follow patterns and ensure quality specifications
- Stand for an 8 hour shift
- Work with diverse population
- Proficient in sewing: single needle, double, needle, serge machine, felling, cover stitch, lockstitch, safety stitch.
- Communicate effectively with a diverse population

Required Skills and Abilities
- Able to understand associates’ sewing abilities
- Ability to understand and teach quality
- Demonstrate proper techniques in holding fabric and moving it down the line
- Proficient in the single needle, double-needle, serge, felling, cover stitch, lock stitch, chain stitch, multi-needle, flat seam, and specialty seams
- Understand production goals, proper sewing techniques, quality, and speed
- Must be able to read a ruler
- Able to follow patterns and ensure quality specifications
- Ability to identify associates with potentials to cross-train, increase skills and abilities
- Able to work with a diverse group
Education and Experience
- 5 years of sewing experience, preferably in manufacturing
- Training, coaching, mentoring
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and use external dexterities for an entire shift
- Able to lift to 15 lbs.
- Noise in the work environment is generally moderate
