What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pre-Surgical Nurse PRN position at Inova Surgery Center?
Inova McLean Ambulatory Surgery Center is seeking an experienced PreOp Assessment Registered Nurse (RN) to join our exceptional team in a PRN capacity. The ideal candidate will possess strong experience in a similar role and have worked closely with anesthesia in document review and be available for 2-3 days/week (hours vary).

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Contact patients prior to surgery for initial assessment of patient needs
- Complete pre-op phone assessment to include but is not limited to:
- Verification of surgery date, time, expected arrival time, and procedure
- Health history of the Surgical Patient
- NPO instructions as per anesthesia pre-op orders
- Any individualized instructions pertinent to patient’s surgery or history
- Consult with Medical Director/Chief of Anesthesia on any special needs depending on health history
- Notify patient and surgeon/PCP of any pre-op lab or EKG needs
- Coordinate with surgeon’s office and patient’s PCP to obtain necessary lab results before admission
- Acquire current History and Physical from PCP/surgeon prior to admission
- Continuously monitor the schedule for any changes on a daily basis
- Communicate any patient special needs (blood sugar, disabilities, anxiety) to the Charge Nurse and/or PreOp/PACU Nurse Managers
- Provide the pre-op phone assessment sheets to the Reception/Admission Specialist for the next days' patient records
- Coordinate with Anesthesia and Pre-op/PACU Nurse Manager or Charge Nurse the pre-admission needs of patients
- Assist patients with any questions which may arise during the pre-admission period
EXPERIENCE YOU'LL NEED:
- Two or more years of experience as a Pre-Operative Assessment RN
- Previous experience in PreOp/PACU is highly desirable
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, with a preference for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree
- Active licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Familiarity with contemporary outpatient surgical practices and trends
- Strong oral and written communication abilities
- Proficient telephone etiquette
- Basic computer literacy
- Mental and physical well-being sufficient to meet the demands of the role
