The Position:
ABOUT UPWARD BOUND:
The Upward Bound Program is grant-funded through the U.S. Department of Education and works with high school students to help them prepare for post-secondary education. Throughout the academic year, students receive individualized advising, tutoring, workshops, and more. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete high school and attend and complete post-secondary education. During the summer, Upward Bound hosts Summer Academy, a six-week program for students to take academic and college courses at Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis in preparation for the upcoming academic year. The Upward Bound program at Ivy Tech Community College Indianapolis serves approximately 60 students from Ben Davis Ninth Grade Center and Ben Davis High School.
GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
We are seeking engaging tutors who have 1) a passion for working with youth, 2) a mastery of the academic subject, and 3) knowledge about teaching methodologies. The primary purpose of this position is to support Upward Bound students in building core curricula skills.
All positions are contract, part-time and nontenure-track positions in the content areas of English, Mathematics, and Science. Tutoring takes place twice each week during the academic year (August through May) and follows the Ben Davis High School calendar.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support students in achieving academic growth and confidence.
- Equip students with the skills needed to succeed in high school and college.
- Prepare students for subject area standardized testing and college entrance exams.
- Nurture an environment of respect and learning.
- Act as a role model for behavior and academic problem-solving.
- Provide feedback to Upward Bound staff regarding student progress.
- Support programming in respective content-area as needed.
- Build relationships with students and attend occasional non-academic events.
- Attend required trainings of the program or partner institutions (Ben Davis High School and Ivy Tech Community College)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate degree or college enrollment required.
- Strong understanding of content area.
- Knowledge of teaching methodologies.
- Experience working with students from diverse and underserved backgrounds.
- Must be available late July through late May.
- Teaching and tutoring experience highly preferred.
- Pass criminal background check.
PAY & HOURS: Available grant funds - $18 per hour for 6-8 hours per week
