POSITION PURPOSE
Under the direct supervision of the Direct Services Manager, the CalFresh Outreach Coordinator performs a wide variety of routine to moderately difficult responsibilities and specialized administrative and program-related duties in support of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank’s operations, including, to encourage active participation in California’s CalFresh Program (formerly known as Food Stamps), Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, and other federal programs aimed at reducing hunger in San Diego County. The individual will perform other related duties as assigned.

- Key figure in the overall success of the CalFresh Outreach Program; promoting and creating countywide awareness of the program.
- Increase participation in California’s CalFresh Program (formerly known as Food Stamps) through community outreach, client direct services, education, advocacy, collaborations with new and existing partners, and working closely with our Food 4 Kids Backpack schools and Nutrition Education.
- Work to increase CalFresh enrollment to the hard to reach populations, such as seniors, veterans, students, unemployed and immigrants, etc.
- Refer clients to our Food Bank food programs, and other federal programs aimed at eliminating hunger in San Diego County.
- Educate residents in the county on how to apply, obtain and retain CalFresh benefits, as well as demonstrating how to use the benefits and teaching about healthier food choices.
- Train agency partners, staff and volunteers on the CalFresh referral process; and monitor affiliate participation and assures full compliance with all regulations governing the CalFresh Outreach Program.
- Arrange and conduct CalFresh presentations, enrollments clinics, workshops, direct application assistance, and trainings to new and current community-based partners at the direction of the CalFresh Outreach Supervisor.
- Assess potential CalFresh eligibility for applicants and assist with completion of CalFresh applications and accompanying verification documents.
- Provide CalFresh follow up to all clients assisted and advocate as needed.
- Work closely and maintain positive relationships with county office liaisons to assure a seamless experience for client applying for CalFresh.
- Keep accurate, detailed records and progress reports on information distributed, contacts and services provided as required. Prepare monthly reports on program outreach and participation.
- Perform outreach in appropriate settings at the direction of the CalFresh Outreach Supervisor.
- Work with CalFresh Outreach Supervisor, Director of Programs, and/or Vice President of Operations on new CalFresh initiatives to increase CalFresh participation in San Diego County.
- Create and establish new partnerships/collaborations that will help expand our county wide efforts.
- Recruit and train community agency staff, volunteers and interns on the importance of increasing CalFresh participation among their client base.
- Promote CalFresh Outreach using flyers, referral forms, and enrollment clinic promotional materials to Food Bank agencies and partners.
- Work with County schools to promote and increase CalFresh participation including Food 4 Kids Backpack Program sites.
- Offer interpretation and assistance to facilitate client access to CalFresh information and services.
- Distribute culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach materials particularly targeting Spanish speaking immigrant communities.
- Provide administrative support for all outreach activities. Some (infrequent) evening and weekend shifts may be required
- Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
- 2-3 years of progressively responsible experience, preferably in a client-facing role within a non-profit organization.
- A combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the job.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, and ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations and program related/contract guidelines within areas of responsibility.
- Windows Operating Systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Outlook, and Word).

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid CA Driver’s license.
- Bilingual Spanish/English/other highly preferred.
- Must have own vehicle and be able to meet travel requirements of position.
- Distributions are held across San Diego County which will require some travel. This also requires ability to be in a variety of environments including outdoor, indoor, and warehouse environments.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
This is a full-time, hourly, benefited position. Position is grant funded through the end of 2026. Further employment after 2026 is dependent on funding.
- Salary range: $25.00-$26.00 per hour depending on experience.

WORK SCHEDULE
- Typical schedule is Monday - Friday 7:30am- 4:00pm
- Two remote workdays per week may be available, subject to organizational needs and individual performance.
