Job Title: Communications Officer – 911 Dispatch Center
Position Overview:
The E911 Communications Officer will be responsible for managing multiple channels of communication simultaneously, such as emergency calls, non-emergency calls, radio traffic, and computer information systems. This position requires efficient prioritization of information, clear and effective communication skills and the ability to operation various systems to ensure timely responses. The communications officer will monitor public safety applications, provide pre-arrival emergency instructions, utilize GIS mapping and maintain accurate records and logs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Answer and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls.
- Dispatch police, fire, and EMS as needed based on jurisdiction.
- Provide pre-arrival emergency instructions.
- Operate a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, multi-channel radio system, telecom system, and a geographical information system (GIS).
- Maintain necessary certifications such as CPR, EMD, EPD, EFD, IDACS or any other certifications required to perform job duties.
- Monitor severe weather information and collaborate with the National Weather Service.
- Coordinate with the Emergency Management Agency during critical incidents.
- Ensure a neat and orderly work environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in using technology, including computers, radios, and software.
- Ability to interpret maps (GIS) and emergency protocols.
- Ability to make decisions, prioritizing tasks, and work efficiently under pressure.
- Capability to learn law enforcement, fire, and EMS terminology.
- Ability to provide pre-arrival emergency instructions.
- Good moral character with no felony convictions.
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Ability to pass a background check, drug test, and interview.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, holidays, and possible mandatory overtime.
- Reliable transportation to and from work in all weather conditions.
