Title: Assistant Coach
Minimum Qualifications: Teacher certification as required by the state or Certification from WVSSAC Coaches
Workshop. Knowledgeable in sports regarding rules and regulations of school policy and
WVSSAC Handbook.
Immediate Supervisor(s): Principal, Athletic Director, Head Coach
Supervises: Students
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Assistant Coach is responsible for the following:
- Leadership and support in area of responsibility
- Establishing and implementing an improvement process for area of responsibility
- Establishing good public and employee relations in area of responsibility
- Maintaining professional work habits
- Maintaining and upgrading his/her professional skills
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
The following performance standards relate to the responsibilities listed below:
- Leadership and support in area of responsibility:
- Demonstrate knowledge of rules and regulations regarding his/her sport as presented in the WVSSAC Handbook
- Assist head coach in proper registration of all athletes
- Assist head coach in systematic issuance of equipment
- Assist head coach in providing accurate information needed to compile eligibility lists and other reports
- Inform his/her team of all rules and regulations, with specific emphasis on the Athletic Code of Conduct, and other athletic department policies
- Be responsible for the actions and conduct of his/her team whenever they are under his/her jurisdiction
- Emphasize safety precautions to control injury
- Submit reports as required by the head coach and athletic director
- Publicly support the philosophy and coaching techniques of the head coach
- Carry out assigned duties and activities designated by the head coach
- Establishing and implementing an improvement process for area of responsibility:
- Exhibit knowledge of all rules and rule changes
- Promote a good sportsmanship program
- Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner
- Establishing good public and employee relations in an area of responsibility:
- Support the head coach in developing a positive image for his/her sport
- Assist in recommending athletes for awards
- Maintaining professional work habits:
- Assist head coach in care of equipment and facilities
- Be punctual for athletic contests and practice sessions
- Conduct self and teams in an ethical mariner during contests and practice
- Assist head coach with end-of-season inventory of equipment
- Maintaining and upgrading his/her professional skills:
- Accept and use new rules and regulations regarding his/her sport.
- Attend the WVSSAC rules clinic.
- Maintain and upgrade professional skills by involvement in the following: staff development, reading professional articles, advanced degrees, research and professional associations.
All assistant coaches are answerable to the head coach and are expected to carry out the wishes and responsibilities set forth by the head coach. Reference here is made to such areas as systems of offense and defense, coaching techniques, scouting for the varsity team and delegated responsibilities at home and away varsity contests, etc.
