School Counselor


IMMEDIATE
SUPERVISOR: Building Principal/ Director of Pupil Services


FLSA STATUS:
Exempt


EMPLOYMENT TERM:
Minimum 220 days annually, pursuant to WV Code §18-5-45; extended employment terms may be established by JCBOE


SALARY:
Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-2, in accordance with

Jefferson County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level


EVALUATION:
Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State

Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and JCBOE Evaluation

Policy


Expectations / Duties and Responsibilities:


  • The school counselor plans, designs and manages a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with the West Virginia Comprehensive School Counseling and American School Counseling Association Models.
  • The school counselor ensures integrated delivery of the WV Student Success Standards, which describe the attitudes, knowledge, skills and behaviors all students shall develop in relation to academic and learning development; career and life planning; personal and social development; and global citizenship.
  • The school counselor provides universal prevention for all students, targeted interventions for at-risk students, and intensive interventions for the specific needs of individual students, providing a continuum of interventions in response to student needs.
  • The school counselor leads the annual implementation, review, and revisions of the Comprehensive School Counseling plan.
  • The school counselor maintains a proactive, systematic approach to assist students with the acquisition of attitudes, knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary to maximize success and preparation for a variety of postsecondary options.
  • The school counselor evaluates the degree to which the school counseling program is implemented and aligns to West Virginia Comprehensive School Counseling model, utilizing student, school, and community data to identify student needs, evaluate the school counseling program, and set annual priorities.
  • The school counselor collaborates with stakeholders to ensure school-wide implementation of the Comprehensive School Counseling Program and other student support programs, insuring a systemic, coordinated approach to program delivery and activity implementation, aimed at supporting the success of all students.
  • The school counselor utilizes research-based best practices to deliver the components of the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • The school counselor provides a continuum of interventions in response to student needs.
  • The school counselor provides information, referral, and support in securing community resources.
  • The school counselor provides effective responsive services; implementing preventive activities and programs to address the identified needs of students, as well as evidence-based interventions to address targeted student needs. These activities include but are not limited to: individual and small group counseling; intervention plans, crisis prevention and response; consultation with parents/guardians and other school staff; and referrals to school and community resources.
  • The school counselor facilitates personalized student planning to discover career interests and educational goals through exploration and self-discovery.
  • The school counselor establishes student supports for successful transitioning through programmatic levels and from school to school, school to work, and school to post-secondary training and education.
  • The school counselor assumes a leadership role in advocating for student and program success.
  • The school counselor facilitates appropriate training for stakeholders and staff related to the School Counseling Program mission and other required social-emotional programs, including suicide awareness and mandated reporting of child abuse.
  • The school counselor assumes responsibilities for individual professional growth and the growth of the school counseling profession.
  • The school counselor adheres to professional ethical standards in conduct and practice as codified in law and policy.
  • The school counselor will be responsible to maintain a daily work log.
  • The school counselor will develop relationships with JCS’s schools to ensure Personalized Education Plans, CTE completion, and student schedules permit students to successfully complete mandatory and personalized virtual courses needed for advancement and graduation.
  • Required to attend monthly staff meetings, faculty senate, and other specified meetings by administration. Some meetings, you may be required to meet at a specified location.
  • Includes supervisory and/or other duties as assigned by Principal/Director of Responsive Education.

Qualifications:

Meet minimum Standards for Certification for PK-Adult as set forth by West Virginia Board of Education Policy 5202 in Minimum Requirements for the Licensure of Professional Personnel and the qualification as outlined in West Virginia Code §18A-4-7a.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach,

stand, walk, lift, grasp, write, talk, hear, see, use technology such as computers and multimedia equipment, and use repetitive motions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 10 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The virtual environment provides the flexibility from working from the employee’s home due to the virtual nature of the classroom. This flexibility requires that counselors have and maintain a viable internet connection and workspace conducive for regular and uninterrupted communications and interactions with the virtual learning environment and students. While participating in the alternative work environment, you are expected to comply with JCS’s telework agreement, or you will be required to report back to a school location.
