Apply for the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Nurse Extern Program starting June 2nd 2025!! Our year-long (June ’25 to May ‘26) Nurse Extern Program is a paid nursing student development program designed to help you build confidence while honing your clinical capabilities.

- Skill Development. Provide clinical care to patients in an assistant care position and may also have additional opportunities to practice nursing skills under the guidance of an experienced and supportive nursing team.
- NCLEX Preparation. Develop the critical thinking skills necessary for success on the NCLEX and beyond during exclusive extern educational offerings.
- Shadow Experiences. Explore nursing and interdisciplinary specialties during shadow days.
- Mentoring. Receive personalized mentoring from nursing leaders.
- Schedule Flexibility. Externs work PRN (minimum 3 shifts in 4 weeks) to allow flexibility in scheduling around school commitments.
After graduation, high-performing nurse externs will be offered a spot in our ANCC PTAP Accredited Nurse Residency Program to begin their registered nursing career.
Shifts: 12-hour shifts
Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in final year at an accredited school of nursing (fall semester graduates may be considered)
- Active CNA certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing
- BLS CPR certification required
- Ability to work full time during 4-week orientation (June 2nd- June 30th). After orientation must work a minimum of 3 shifts in 4 weeks.
