Summary
The Day Camp Counselor creates a safe, fun environment for school aged children. Under the guidance of the Program Coordinator and / or Recreation Superintendent, Day Camp Counselors’ are primarily responsible for planning, implementing, and supervising high quality, developmentally appropriate activities in specific program areas, ensuring children’s social, physical and mental development in the program.
Essential Duties

- Maintain effective communication with supervisors, camp staff, participants, and families
- Directly responsible for the safety and supervision of camp participants
- Plan, prepare, and set-up activities and projects for summer camp participants.
- Ensure that all materials and instructions are ready and prepared for activities.
- Create and implement fun theme days for campers
- Supervise and interact with assigned participants during all day camp activities and on field trips
- Actively participate in all camp activities, including swimming
- Monitor participants during activities, including while in the pool
- Promote and encourage camper participation in daily activities.
- Complete daily reports for assigned participants
- Assist with daily living skills
- Maintain program supplies and equipment
- Know health emergency procedures and evacuation plans
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment for children to learn and grow. Ensure all materials and the location are fully cleaned up before leaving.
- Maintain a positive environment.
- Enforce policies, rules, and safety regulations.
- Use appropriate and positive discipline when necessary for participants.
- Document and communicate any issues that are occurring with participants, families, or staff.
- Help serve and monitor lunch and snack while assisting any participants who may need it.
- Drive a Joliet Park District vehicle when necessary.

Part time Monday through Friday during specified weeks of camp

This job will be performed indoors and outdoors with varying weather conditions.
Physical demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; sit; bend; kneel; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear; and carry materials. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to communicate with co-workers and parents / guardians. Must be able to perform assigned tasks.
Education and Experience
CPR / First Aid certification required or the ability to obtain upon hire.
Complete DCFS Mandated Reporter Training upon hire
