General Purpose: An Instructional Assistant assists teachers in the delivery of education to students in general education classrooms with the goal of helping students reach their educational goals. Due to the varied and individual needs of each student, instructional assistants may provide a variety of support and assistance, and should be flexible adjusting to student needs.
Supervision: Works under the guidance and direction of teachers and school principal.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist a certified teacher in providing instruction in a regular/mainstream or special education (Title I or self-contained) classroom to all students including those with Individual Education Plans (IEP) or Title I classifications.
- Reinforce instruction and direct (student) group activities in the classroom, under the direction of the classroom teacher.
- Facilitate and/or monitor small group and one-to-one instruction of students in order to present, guide, and/or reinforce concepts, skills, and strategies. Plan, prepare, and carry out instruction and/or lesson material (i.e. graphic organizer for special student) for individual and groups of students.
- Administer assigned testing instruments for the purpose of collecting data, screening, monitoring progress, and determining benchmark and mastery levels.
- Supervising all students in the classroom, and/or other areas of the school (library, computer labs, music, art, kiva, restroom areas etc.) and controlling behavior of students according to approved classroom and school policies and procedures; reporting behavior problems to the appropriate person immediately.
- Participate in job related training, such as (core academic) tutoring, test administration, medical, behavior and/or other special needs.
- Perform other related duties (such as bus supervision, tutor and/or test administration, training, medical care for students, accompany students on field trips etc.) as assigned by principal, teacher, and/or other supervisor.
- Substitute teaching in a regular or special education classroom as requested by the principal.

- Convey a professional image through appropriate grooming, dress, and language.
- Demonstrate punctuality and regular attendance. Please plan to arrive a few minutes before your scheduled time in a classroom or with students.
- Act with discretion by maintaining confidentiality of records and information related to students and families.
Confidentiality: ALL instructional assistants will strictly adhere with no exceptions to confidentiality requirements regarding all matters pertaining to students, (academic, medical, behavioral) parents, parent communications, and/or classroom activities.
Discussion of specific issues and/or events concerning a student in a classroom are the responsibility of the classroom teacher, i.e. a discipline plan, a student’s behavior in class, a conflict between students, a conflict between a student and a teacher. Discussion of a specific teacher’s perceived instructional ability and/or performance is the responsibility of the school principal to evaluate.
