What are the responsibilities and job description for the Resident position at Lakeland Community Church?
/ What is a Residency /
A Leadership Residency is a one-year paid opportunity with Lakeland Community Church. The goal of the residency is to equip, train, and prepare leaders for the calling to vocational ministry. The Residency is an intensive and intentional experience where the resident spends a year leading and growing in a specific ministry area. During that time, the resident learns and trains in the fundamentals of being on a church staff.
/ Who are Residents /
Residents are individuals whom God is calling to something significant for the Kingdom. They are strategically planning and preparing to launch into vocational ministry. Lakeland identifies, coaches, and releases these residents to lead ministries within a local church.

/ The Six Developmental Components /
MINISTRY EXPERIENCE
The residency is focused on providing ministry experience. Its goal is to equip residents with the leadership skills and knowledge needed to effectively lead as pastors. To achieve this, residents require substantial real-life ministry experience.
Residents gain experience by serving as part of a staff team in one of the ministry areas of the church. The area in which a resident serves is chosen based on their experience, team chemistry, and desired ministry future. Below is a list of the areas at Lakeland in which a resident might serve:
· Children’s Ministry
· Middle School Ministry
· High School Ministry
· Small Group Ministry
· Care and Missions Ministry
· Worship Ministry
· Campus Pastor
· Guest Services
Participants in the program will have real ministry responsibilities on the Lakeland staff. This is not a "shadowing" program where participants only observe our staff, nor is it an "assistantship" where they do menial tasks. Instead, essential ministry responsibilities will be assigned to support the ongoing ministry at Lakeland.
LEADERSHIP COACHING
During the weekly one-on-one meeting with their direct report, at least 30 minutes will be allocated to discussing ministry/leadership development with the resident using the Tools for Reproducing strategy. The purpose of this time is to ensure that the resident is growing in ministry competence during the residency.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Personal Development is similar to Leadership Coaching but also different. Personal Development focuses more on who the resident is rather than what the resident does. During the one-on-one sessions, at least 15 minutes will be dedicated to personal development using the RPMS. The aim of this time is to ensure that the resident is growing as a person and as a Christian during the residency.
LEADERSHIP TRAINING CURRICULUM
The Leadership Training Curriculum is reviewed during the weekly training meeting, providing valuable insight into various types of leadership. It encompasses self-leadership, relational leadership, and organizational leadership.
WINNING STAFF AND CHURCH CULTURE
Being part of a successful team is infectious. Residents greatly benefit from being welcomed into a staff and church culture that is thriving and healthy. Within this environment, they absorb the subtleties and attitudes that distinguish successful teams from others.
QUARTERLY EVALUATIONS
The formal evaluation process occurs quarterly and provides feedback to the resident and the resident coach regarding the residency and the resident’s preparedness for pastoral ministry. This process not only serves as an important tool in itself, but also helps identify any development issues that may have been overlooked in other components.
/ Resident Completion /
Residents start their job search 6 months before completing their residency. Each resident will receive individual training and development from Lakeland to prepare them to serve as the next generation of church leaders.
