Job Description
Purpose and Scope:
The Dock Supervisor is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the dock, including coordinating the movement of incoming and outgoing shipments, supervising dock workers, and ensuring the timely and accurate handling of goods. They oversee loading and unloading activities, inspect shipments for accuracy and quality, and maintain a safe working environment. The Dock Supervisor also collaborates with other departments to prioritize shipments, resolve issues, and optimize dock efficiency. Additionally, they may be involved in training dock personnel, maintaining equipment, and implementing process improvements to enhance productivity.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of dock personnel, including dock workers, forklift operators, and material handlers, to ensure efficient and timely processing of inbound and outbound shipments.
- Assign tasks and responsibilities to dock team members, prioritize workload, and manage staffing levels to meet operational demands and customer service objectives.
- Train new employees on proper loading/unloading procedures, equipment operation, safety protocols, and company policies, providing guidance and support to foster a culture of safety and excellence.
- Monitor dock operations to ensure compliance with safety regulations, quality standards, and productivity goals, identifying and addressing any issues or concerns that may arise during the shift.
- Coordinate with inbound and outbound transportation teams, warehouse managers, and other departments to prioritize shipments.
- Perform regular inspections of loading docks, equipment, and facilities to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, or operational inefficiencies.
- Report findings on maintenance or facilities management.
- Maintain accurate records of shipping/receiving activities, including inbound/outbound shipments, inventory levels, and equipment usage, using computerized systems or manual logs as required.
- Communicate effectively to provide status updates, address inquiries, and resolve issues related to shipment processing, delays, or discrepancies.
- Enforce company policies and procedures related to workplace safety, security, and regulatory compliance.

Skills / Qualifications:
- Ability to lead and motivate a team of dock workers, forklift operators.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively convey instructions, provide feedback, address issues with team members, and interact with other departments and management.
- Strong organizational abilities to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and ensure that shipments are processed efficiently and accurately.
- Proficiency in identifying problems, analyzing root causes, and implementing effective solutions.
- Capacity to manage time effectively and allocate resources efficiently to meet shipping deadlines, minimize downtime, and maximize productivity on the dock.
- Thorough understanding of safety regulations, OSHA standards, and best practices for warehouse safety.
- Job Competency / Qualifications
Education/ Training:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in logistics, supply chain management, or related field preferred.
- Previous supervisory experience preferred.
- Current commercial driver’s license (CDL) with clean state motor vehicle truck operator’s record highly preferred.
Technical Requirements:
- Familiarity with warehouse management systems (WMS), inventory tracking software, and other technology tools used to monitor and manage dock operations, track shipments, and maintain accurate records.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Basic understanding of truck freight rates.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience:
- High school diploma, GED or equivalent; additional education or training in logistics, supply chain management, or related field preferred.
