What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineer in Training position at Lee County?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) Traffic Team is seeking a recent engineering college graduate to join the team. This role involves aiding in traffic signal monitoring and timing, as well as performing operational evaluations both at individual traffic signals and within the corridors controlled by the Econolite Centracs Signal System. Lee County DOT operates over 450 signals across the County, regardless of the jurisdictional owner (state, county, or local government).


The County boasts an active and expanding intelligent transportation system (ITS), with most ITS devices, including intersection controllers, connected via fiber optics to the operations center, where this position is based. These ITS devices are essential tools for performing the duties associated with this role. Interaction with the public and coordination with other traffic signal owners within Lee County (Florida Department of Transportation District 1 and local governments) is integral to this position.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Utilize various engineering and technical publications provided by FDOT, FHWA, and other sources for the purpose of conducting investigations leading to written technical reports, emails, letters, or verbal communication with citizens, governmental entities, or other agencies.
  • Investigate timing complaints and make adjustments as needed.
  • Prepare engineering reports of varying degrees of complexity, that will be reviewed by the County Traffic Engineer and used for justification and communication of proposed changes to traffic control devices or roadway geometries as they relate to traffic signals and signal systems.
  • Receive, review, and respond to citizen requests (comments and concerns) via phone and/or email. Tasks relating to citizen requests can vary from a simple conversation to the completion of a traffic signal evaluation to determine the validity and feasibility of their request. 
  • Monitor individual traffic signals and signal systems for verification of running correct timing plans.
  • Review/retime signal systems as needed.
  • Conduct field reviews of signal systems.
  • Perform related work as assigned.
Education, Experience, Licensing

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in engineering is required.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam administered by National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
  • A Class E Florida driver’s license or a valid driver’s license from another state at the time of hire, with the expectation of obtaining a Class E Florida driver's license within 30 days of employment.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Candidates who have applied for or already obtained a Florida Engineer Intern (EI) certificate will be given preference.
Supplemental Information

The position's work schedule is Monday through Thursday, from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

All County employees are required to work before, during, or after an emergency as needed. This may include temporarily being assigned to work and performing duties outside of the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
