Description:Assembles and welds complex metal assemblies and prepares surface prior to and after, using welding, soldering and brazing equipment; receives oral and written instructions and blueprints, sketched or orders of materials; shapes metal parts to print specifications using tools such as bending rollers, grinders and wrenches; assembles parts, clamping together with bolts, blocks, C-clamps and vise; arc welds by connecting electrode and material to poles of generator striking an arc between the seam to be welded and the electrode and moving the electrode along the seam; gas welds by heating the metal to be joined and a welding rod with an acetylene torch, flowing the metal from the rod into the joint; brazes by brushing flux on joint, applying gas torch to joint and rod of brazing metal, causing brazing metal to flow into joint; dip brazes by preheating material in furnace and dipping the brazing solution for prescribed times; solders by applying heat to joint with soldering iron or gas torch and applying solder to hot joint; examines and measures completed assembly for conformance to specifications, using scales and micrometers; lifts assembly onto skid when necessary with block and tackle; cuts metal to shape using flame cutting machine; directs activities of Assembler who assists in construction of large assemblies; packs and unpacks as necessary; directs activities of others assisting on the job. May perform welding operations on models as assigned. May be required to set up and operate spot welding equipment. This is a 2nd shift position. US citizenship is required.
Basic Qualifications:
Requires ability to weld using arc, gas and spot welding methods and equipment; perform performance qualification test welds in accordance with MIL. STD. 278 and 2219; this must be done using the GTAW and SMAW welding processes on aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel and copper-nickel; perform performance qualification test samples in accordance with NAVSEA 0900-LP-001-7000 using the torch brazing process.
