Job Title: Water Operator
Position Type: Full-time, Entry-level
Job Description:
As a Water Operator, you will help operate, inspect, maintain, and repair various LBWC facilities, including a granulated activated carbon (GAC) filtration plant, water storage tanks, wells, booster stations, and associated controls. This entry-level position will involve learning the day-to-day operations and systems while performing essential tasks under close supervision from the Operations Manager and General Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Monitoring & Operation: Use computer systems to monitor and operate the water system, ensuring proper function.
- Maintenance & Repair: Assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment related to the GAC plant, well sites, and pumping stations.
- Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance tasks, logging work into the computerized management system.
- Equipment Inspections & Adjustments: Conduct regular inspections of plant equipment and pump stations, making necessary adjustments to maintain proper operations.
- Laboratory Testing: Perform basic water quality tests to monitor the filter plant and distribution system.
- Chlorine Dosage Monitoring: Oversee and adjust chlorine dosages for water treatment processes.
- General Maintenance: Perform physical tasks including cleaning, painting, and grounds upkeep.
- Safety & Compliance: Follow safe work practices and procedures for operating tools and machinery.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Basic computer and math skills (algebra)
- Operating principles of pumps, valves, and motors
- Safe work practices and use of hand and power tools
- General building and grounds maintenance
Ability to:
- Obtain Grade T2 Water Treatment Operator and Grade D2 Water Distribution Operator certifications within 12 months of employment
- Work safely and efficiently with various mechanical equipment
- Operate and maintain water treatment and distribution systems
- Use software and equipment to monitor and operate water systems
- Maintain accurate records and reports
- Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 80 lbs, climbing ladders, and working at heights
- Communicate effectively with team members and the public
- Drive and operate an automobile safely
Training & Experience:
- Experience in Mechanical knowledge but not required
- High school diploma or GED required
Licenses:
- Valid Class C California Driver’s License and a safe driving record
Other Requirements:
- Must be able to use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects. Use muscles to lift, push, pull, or carry heavy objects (51-100 pounds frequently).
- Must be available for on-call duty, including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Must be within a 45-minute response time under normal traffic conditions
- Willingness to study independently and attend classes to obtain required certifications within 12 months
