JOB
This is investigative work in the Public Defender's Office. An employee in this class would interview applicants for services by the Public Defender's Office, verifies necessary information to determine their eligibility, and gathers information for use by attorneys in preparing and conducting cases. Work requires frequent contact with numerous individuals and organizations to verify and clarify information. Employees are required to evaluate the reliability of information sources and judge the results that required to serve subpoenas, testify in court, and work outside the local area and outside of normal office hours when investigations require it. Client eligibility determinations and general work performance are reviewed by an administrative supervisor. Investigative findings are reviewed and evaluated by staff attorneys.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Typical Examples of Work Interviews applicants to determine whether they meet legal standards of eligibility for the Public Defender services. Interviews clients to gather information about the charges against them and to compile lists of potential witnesses. Contacts family members, employers, welfare and health agencies, landlords, etc. to verify client status. Contacts police agencies, court offices, and witnesses to gather details about cases, substantiate alibis, and collect information requested by attorneys. Assists clients in preparing applications for special court considerations, verifying their accuracy and eligibility. Take photographs of crime scenes and gathers other physical evidence. Service subpoenas to assure witnesses appear in court. Attends trials, hearings, plea negotiations, etc. to testify and to assist attorneys as required. Collects and reports information requested by clients in County Prison. Perform related work as required.
