What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technical Inspector I position at Macon Water Authority?
Job Summary:
Performs technical engineering work in the inspection of construction projects for the Authority. Performs moderately complex engineering inspections, drafting or surveying tasks, and mathematical computation associated with engineering, planning, inspections, and related office or fieldwork.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares daily written reports.
- Recommends field changes to management.
- Inspect independent contractors’ work for adherence to design specifications and verifies contractors’ scheduled completion dates and cost estimates.
- Learn how to use surveying instruments to take random spot levels, determines pipe level, and set stakes.
- Verify contractor pay estimates
- Provides construction data to answer inquiries
- Keeps an inspection log on active permits and actions taken and approves or indicates corrective action
- Reviews plans and specifications before construction
- Assist with processing change orders or referring proposed changes to the project engineer.
- Communicate effectively with site administrators, architects, engineers, other staff, vendors, outside agencies, and the public
- Operate standard office equipment, including computers and related software applications
- Interpret or obtain an interpretation of plans (Sewer, Water, Stormwater and Erosion, Sedimentation and Pollution Control (ESPC) and specifications for contractors
- Inspect water and sewer tap connections, meters, valves, hydrants, manholes, sewer pump stations, water mains, and stormwater systems to determine if the quality of work meets Authority requirements.
- Draws location maps, installs pressure-recording gauges, and runs flow tests.
- Certify that work and material comply with the terms and conditions of contract documents
- Performs utility locations on an as-needed basis.

Conduct or witness a gamut of tests:
- Gravity Sewer: closed circuit tv, low-pressure air, mandrel test, and vacuum test
- Water Mains: pressure and leakage test and disinfection of water mains
- Attends pre-construction meetings with Bibb County Engineering Department as MWA representative for various residential and commercial jobs.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested by supervisors.
Qualifications:
- Two years of technical school or equivalent.
- One to three years of experience.
- Able to obtain a Level 1B Certified Inspector (Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission) within one year of hire
- Desired National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) certification
- A valid Georgia Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking, standing, stooping
- Ability to carry 25 pounds up to 50 pounds and occasionally over 50 pounds.
- Occasionally sitting, crawling, crouching, climbing, and balancing.
- Ability to grasp and hold.
