Job Description
Title: Food Services Assistant
Division: Academy-Wide
Reports to: Coordinator of School Operations
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt (During Academic Year)
Salary: $23 - $27 per hour
Position Summary
The role of the Food Services Assistant, under the direction of the Food Services Coordinators and Coordinator of School Operations, is to administer Making Waves Academy’s food service program, which offers students nutritious meals.
Essential Functions

- Assist with food service: Serve meals that are maintained, served, and stored in accordance with mandated guidelines.
- Support in washing, preparing, and storing food
- Ensure food and supplies are stocked, organized, and available
- Clean and maintain kitchen, dining and food services area(s) that comply with the Department of Health safety and sanitary standards, request custodial and maintenance support as needed.
- Assist with special functions and events. Perform light maintenance/custodial tasks like moving furniture, etc.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Work Environment
- Food service/cafeteria setting
- Exposure to sharp knives and other objects used in a food service operation
Physical Demands
- Ability to perform light maintenance
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time and frequently walk across the campus
- Ability to see for purposes of reading printed matter. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate kitchen equipment
- Ability to bend and twist, stoop, kneel, climb a ladder, reach in all directions, lift, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and at least six months related experience. Experience working in a school environment is preferred
- Knowledge of basic methods, equipment, safety and sanitation practices used in food service work
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to: Learn and perform basic food preparation and food service activities, including the safe use and care of utensils, equipment and work area, and maintain clean and sanitary work areas
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, complete tasks, and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and communicate in a positive manner. Ability to function effectively within a multilingual environment that is ethnically and culturally diverse and student oriented
- Professional orientation – appearance, communication, organization, and attitude
Licenses or Certificates
- Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis, COVID-19 vaccination, and/or other employment clearance
- Possession of, or ability to obtain ServSafe Certification
