I. Position Summary

Operating in conjunction with the mission and foundational principles of Malone, the Dean for Community Life’s general responsibilities include overseeing and advocating for the student experience, being a liaison between students and faculty, and fostering a supportive campus environment. This role involves managing the residence life program, campus housing, student accountability and welfare, along with overseeing other student organizations and resources to ensure the wellbeing and development of the student body. Their team is comprised of the Housing Coordinator, Resident Directors, Office Manager and other staff that provide student services.

The Dean plays an integral role in setting the tone for much of community life and the student

experience outside the classroom. Under the supervision of the VP for Student Development, the Dean of Community Life provides leadership and direction in the formation of the general student body.

II. Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities

A. Leads Residence Life program:

a. Develops strategies that enhance the overall quality of student life and retention.

b. Provides and coordinates training/education of residence life staff and students engaged in residence life activities; includes organizing, developing, and facilitating periodic workshops and seminars.

c. Supervises key student development personnel; i.e. housing coordinator, resident directors (RDs), and key student leaders. Fulfills performance evaluations, assessments, and makes recommendations for personal action. Ensures ethical

performance is effectively communicated and upheld.

d. Assigns work allocation (i.e., responsibilities, duty schedules, etc.); enforces internal procedures and policies, and problem resolution; motivates Residence Life employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.

e. Monitors/coordinates activities of RDs, and serves as the primary resource for information and problem resolution. With the assistance of the RDs, oversees student resident assistants and ensures compliance with residence hall policies.

f. Assists in the day-to-day operations of the Office of Student Development.

B. Director of Campus Housing

a. Oversees management, operations, and strategic planning for on-campus residential facilities.

b. Hires, trains, supervises housing coordinator (HC): Provides oversight of HC in order to achieve peak productivity and performance in residential living.

c. Ensures housing policies promote student well-being; advises HC in the organization and allocation of housing space, maintenance of appropriate residence hall records, and monitors trends in housing.

d. Provides oversight in off-campus housing petitions and communications with students and families regarding housing.

e. Collaborates with maintenance/facilities teams to ensure halls are safe, well- maintained, and compliant with health and safety standards.

C. Program Coordination

a. Develops, implements, and supports programs that promote student engagement, leadership, and academic success.

b. Partners with other campus departments in the development of purposeful, comprehensive activities and program efforts for all Malone University students. (i.e. participates in campus events related to Admissions, graduation, or the Center for Student Success in retention initiatives).

c. Collaborates with faculty, staff, and administrators to improve the overall student experience.

D. Student Accountability & Welfare

a. Serves as a key point of contact for student concerns, addressing issues related to personal development, accountability, and well-being.

b. Oversees student conduct processes and serves as the chief officer for accountability/student disciplinary matters. Ensures institutional policies related to student behavior, are effectively communicated and upheld.

c. Develops and implements policies that promote respect, inclusivity, and community standards.

d. Mediates conflicts involving interpersonal, academic student issues. Provides counseling referral services.

e. Provides crisis management and intervention services as needed, ensuring timely responses to emergencies affecting students.

f. Participates on the Emergency Preparedness Committee.

g. Assists with Title IX compliance; serves as Deputy Title IX Coordinator and facilitates hearing panel.

h. Maintains knowledge of and communication with external constituents; i.e.,

knowledge of NCAA Division II rules and regulations, and other federal regulations.

E. Manages and oversees allocated budgets; i.e. Student Senate, Residence Life, and associated groups.

F. Advisor for Student Government

a. Serves as a key point of contact for student senate leadership, addressing issues related to services and wellbeing of students; holds regular meetings with Student Senate President and Vice President.

b. Supervisory attendance at Student Senate meetings

c. Advisory input for Student Senate training

G. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

VI. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Education: A Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field is required.

Experience: At least 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in student affairs ore a related field, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple departments and initiatives.

Skills: strong leadership and management ability, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, conflict resolution expertise, ability to collaborate with a wide range of people, proven time management skills and computer literacy with record-keeping skills are essential, ability to maintain confidentiality, and a working understanding of student development theory and higher education laws. Must exhibit a

personal understanding of and operate in concert with the Mission statement and Foundational Principles of the University.

Current valid driver’s license and availability for some travel is required. Hours per week are anticipated to vary based on the needs and fluctuations of the academic calendar. Evening and weekend commitments will be necessary at times.
