Pharmacy Technician This position full-time will work Monday through Friday 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. based in our North English Pharmacy. There will be some shifts covering the pharmacy at Compass Memorial Healthcare, based on schedules. Minimum 2-years of previous pharmacy experience is required and may include one of the following:
Inpatient hospital-pharmacy is desirable.
Retail pharmacy
Other pharmacy experience.
Must possess a valid Pharmacy Technician registration with the State of Iowa within 30 days of hire.
Must possess a Certification (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or other accredited entity at hire or within one year of hire.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
Under the direction of a pharmacist, the pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions, in compliance with the department policies and procedures and within state and federal regulations of the practice of pharmacy. The pharmacy technician supports the pharmacist in the day-to-day activities related to providing pharmaceutical care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Rotates through all work areas of the pharmacy including hospital, outpatient clinics, and retail pharmacy setting.
• Performs careful and accurate work in any technical area as assigned
• Adheres to hospital regulations and state/federal standards and guidelines
• Screens department telephone calls, e-mail and voice messages
• Prepares medications and supplies for dispensing, including but not limited to barcode packaging of medications, compounded medications, sterile compounding, and controlled substances for individual patients as well as hospital departments and other services (eg. crash cart kits)
• Labels medication accurately and appropriately, in accordance with state and federal regulations
• Completes stocking of automated dispensing systems (e.g. Omnicell)
• Monitors for outdated medication/supplies in pharmacy and automated dispensing machines and coordinates destruction/return per department policy including medical clinic samples and stock
• Transports medications, drug delivery devices and other pharmacy equipment from the pharmacy to nursing units and clinic areas.
• Maintains, orders and stocks medication and pharmacy supplies in the pharmacy department
• Assists with department billing of pharmacy stocked medications.
• Performs monthly nursing unit inspections to ensure appropriate medication storage and record keeping while maintaining records of such as required
• Assists in collecting and reporting quality assurance data for the department
• Assists department in maintaining accurate record keeping in accordance to state and federal requirements, including controlled substances control/inventory
• Cleans laminar flow hood daily, per department policy and assures routine maintenance schedule/documentation per regulations
• Performs sterile compounding utilizing strict aseptic technique under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, including but not limited to IV antibiotics, large volume parenteral fluids and chemotherapy
• Is knowledgeable and adheres to all safety practices while performing duties to minimize any risk of injury and/or exposure to bio-hazardous pharmaceuticals/materials
• Assists in the preparation, development, implementation and attainment of departmental projects, goals and policies
• Attends in-services, on the job training and continuing education programs to maintain competencies and certification
• Assists in training new employees/students
• Communicates effectively with other departments/members of the healthcare team

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education, Experience, and Training
a. High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) preferred.
b. Minimum 2 years of previous pharmacy experience is required and may include one of the following:
i. Inpatient hospital-pharmacy is desirable.
ii. Retail pharmacy
iii. Other pharmacy
c. Prefer greater than 3-years previous experience in a pharmacy and/or healthcare setting.
d. Must possess a valid state Pharmacy Technician registration with the State of Iowa within 30 days of hire.
d. Must possess a Certification (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or other accredited entity within one year of hire date.
e. Must possess knowledge of medications and medical supplies.
f. Must possess basic understanding of pharmacy practices and procedures.

h. Must possess the ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in written form, needs and solutions with all levels of the organization.
i. Must possess valid Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse.
