What are the responsibilities and job description for the Power Plant Working Supervisor position at Maryknoll Sisters?
The Power Plant Working Supervisor manages 24 hour Power Plant operations of the Maryknoll Sisters Center which provides heat, ventilation and hot water for five buildings on the compound.
The individual in this position supervises the Watch Engineers on staff and provides necessary training for their responsibilities.
A major responsibility of this supervisor is ensuring the safety of residents and staff through proper management of equipment, and regular security checks of the property.
This position is a Working Supervisor position. Must be able to fill in for Watch Engineers on all shifts if needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Provides for and oversees the provision of the proper supply of steam
to the complex by starting up and regulating controls of boilers; ensures
that daily equipment inspections are conducted, and meter readings in
each of the buildings is documented during all shifts.
2. Assures the proper maintenance of the Power Plant and its equipment
by performing or overseeing the installation, repair, overhaul, cleaning
and lubricating, and by ordering required parts and replacements.
Administers the preventive maintenance plan for the heating plant;
documents necessary information and maintains accessible records
and files in a secure place.
3. Ensures the protection and safety of residents, employees, and property
from theft, harmful acts, hazards or interference by training the Watch
Engineers and scheduling regular rounds by the Watch Engineers on foot
or motor vehicle, throughout 24 (twenty-four) hours.
4. Supervises the Watch Engineer/Security Staff, completes required Performance
Appraisals, and recommends any necessary personnel actions to the Assistant
Facilities Manager; participates in the hiring of replacement staff.
5. Makes suggestions to the Facilities Manager for Power Plant and Security
improvements and equipment needs; calculates consumption of fuel oil.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
1. Monitors the fire alarm system, and keeps system files in a secure place.
2. Designs and coordinates the overall schedule for Watch Engineers and
Maintenance Mechanics to handle snow removal in collaboration with the
Assistant Facilities Manager. (Seasonal

to operate the heavy equipment for snow removal. (Seasonal)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
(a) Mechanical aptitude for large equipment operations.
(b) Ability to be a team player as a part of the larger, overall Physical Plant services.
(c) Ability to plan, organize, direct, calculate and report.
(d) Flexibility to do varied jobs and to respond to problems and emergencies as they arise.
(e) Ability to adjust to changing environment (inside/outside, poorly ventilated areas,
dust, heat and odors).
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Experience in Power Plant/Boiler Plant operations. “Hands-on” experience with heating and utility systems.
MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED
High School Diploma or completion of Trade School.
Engineering degree and/or certification preferable.
