General statement of duties:
Massachusetts Maritime Academy’s Mariner Credentialing office is searching for a full-time Director of Mariner Credentialing, responsible for implementing the US Coast Guard credentialing process for license-track Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering students. The ideal candidate values a student-oriented approach, focusing on customer service, information accuracy, and strong communication. A key part of the role is engaging with faculty and other assessors to ensure records-keeping systems are up-to-date and meeting with cadets to communicate their progress toward program completion. The Director will serve as the primary subject matter expert in Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), and ensure the USCG credentialing process is personalized for each license-track student. The Director supervises an Assistant Director, Administrative Assistant and part-time instructors.
General Responsibilities:
- Manages US Coast Guard licensing records.
- Supervises the staff of the Mariner Credentialing Office
- Interacts daily with students on their credential file.
- Engages with faculty to ensure timely and proper data input.
- Acts as a subject matter expert in the specialized data management mariner credentialing software system.
- Updates software, record assessments, and facilitates preparation for the Coast Guard’s program renewal audit every five years pursuant to 46 CFR Subchapter B, Subpart D, and maintain records and systems in the intervening years.
- Conducts meetings and/or training sessions from time to time outside the normal working day.

- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering or related field.
- Strong computer and software literacy, data management skills, and record-keeping ability.
- Interest in the maritime environment and Coast Guard licensing process.
- Excellence in written and oral communication.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with software systems commonly used in higher education, i.e. Ellucian and Informer.
- Background in higher education and/or past teaching experience.
- Documentation as a current or past credentialed mariner.
