COMMUNICATION & CONTROL TECHNICIAN
Non-Exempt Status Grade 9
Reports To: Distribution Automation & Metering Supervisor
Supervises: No Supervisory Responsibilities
Pre-requisites
Education: Required two-year degree in electrical or electronics technology and two (2) years’ work experience, or a minimum of five (5) years’ work experience in the utility industry or equivalent experience with the installation, maintenance, or repair of instrumentation and control equipment.
Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic electrical principles and demonstrated proficiency in basic math skills.
- Ability to install, modify, and repair equipment related to electronics, instrumentation, and control telemetry.
- Ability to work with radio frequency (RF) enabled devices and troubleshoot circuits related to RF transmission and communication.
- Ability to reason analytically and relate theoretical concepts to actual needs; to be adaptable to changing conditions and equipment.
- Proficient in the use of electronic spreadsheets, word processing programs, email, and database management (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and Access experience) required.
- Technical writing and the comprehension of it is required.
- Ability to interpret and understand technical manuals, electronic schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Competent in coordinating with other employees and possesses the ability to work effectively independently as well as on a team.
Other requirements: Must have and maintain a valid Texas driver’s license.

Typical Responsibilities Include
1. Assists in maintaining Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) electronic equipment and process control systems, including electronic instruments and telemetry.
2. Observes troubleshooting procedures for routine network and communications hardware including RF network routers and remote RF radios.
3. Assists with acceptance and installation tests on protection, control, and measurement devices and associated equipment.
4. Assists with installation, testing, configuration, and repair of electrical and electronic components and devices; maintains and programs distribution equipment control panels.
5. Assists with troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and mis-operations, reports findings and resolutions.
6. Works closely with Operations Center to maintain functionality of SCADA controls for reliable 24/7 operation.
7. Assists system engineers, metering department, and consumer accounting department to maintain reliable operation of the cooperative’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system.
8. Wears personal protective clothing and equipment such as overalls/jumpsuit, hardhat, safety glasses, etc. as appropriate; attends safety meetings and becomes certified in CPR, first aid and use of fire extinguisher.
9. Performs all duties according to applicable safety, policy, and procedure manuals. Follows MEC, NEC, RUS, OSHA, state and other regulatory agency safety procedures and rules in the performance of all work.
10. Must be able to work during emergency conditions.
11. Reports and documents any changes in equipment location, condition, and operation.
12. Conduct must reflect a professional image when in contact with members, the general public, and other MEC employees.
13. Performs any other duties as assigned by management.

· Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance.
· Must be able to communicate with others in person and on the telephone clearly and courteously.
· Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
· Occasionally requires driving a vehicle and traveling alone.
