Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services

  • Job Type: Full-time (40 hours per week)
  • Clinical Services: 36 hours weekly dedicated to providing clinical services to patients
  • Administrative Time: 4 hours weekly allocated for administrative responsibilities

Essential Duties:

  • Plans and organizes activities related to specified clinical services to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with professional standards of psychiatric care.
  • Develops and implements comprehensive psychiatric services plan at each identified clinic
  • Interprets, develops, complies with and enforces psychiatric/medical policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates delivery of psychiatric medical services with the Medical Director, Director of Clinic Services and Director of Behavioral Health Services.
  • Confers with managers and staff concerning the resolution of patient complaints, requests and inquiries.
  • Assumes responsibilities for ongoing psychiatric clinic staff continuing education.
  • Provides clinical supervision and evaluation of mid-level psychiatric practitioners.
  • Assists with Behavioral Health nursing staff performance evaluations.
  • Acts as provider staff liaison to WPCC.
  • Aids in developing pharmaceutical guidelines.
  • Oversees maintenance of psychiatric medical records and equipment.
  • Oversees quality assurance program for Behavioral Health clinics.
  • Examines diagnoses and treats mental disorders including but not limited to: anxiety, substance abuse, bi-polar disorders, schizophrenia, attention deficit disorders, and obsessive compulsive disorders.
  • Performs comprehensive evaluations of patients according to the quality assurance guidelines of psychiatry.
  • Reviews history of present illness and past history as well as Behavioral Health Provider patient assessments/evaluations.
  • Interviews patients to obtain insight into their problems.
  • Provides mental status evaluations, formulations, diagnosis and detailed treatment plans utilizing a biopsychosocial paradigm.
  • Provides recommendations for patient care, implements special regulations, standing orders and techniques.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation, records and reports.
  • Requests referrals for further diagnostic psychological or medical testing as needed.
  • Recognizes the connection between mental and physical disorders, orders laboratory or other diagnostic tests.
  • Consults with patient family members, community referral sources and MHM Behavioral Health team members.
  • Communicates with patients, patient’s families and others to obtain personal and social information pertinent to the development of adjustment difficulty and to ascertain probable impact on the individual, unit and community.
  • Provides consultations on psychiatric disease to the MHM staff physicians.
  • Provides in-service training to MHM staff during his/her regular scheduled hours. In-service training is informal training to/by staff members to update treatment procedures.
  • Provides crisis intervention and referral for psychiatric hospitalization
  • Attends and participates in meetings during normal duty hours and professional staff conferences as well as other appropriate professional activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

Graduate of an accredited graduate school of Medicine with either a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree. Successful completion of psychiatric residency training required.

Language Ability:

Ability to read, analyzes, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to use original or innovative techniques or styles to provide effective communication on complex topics to management.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply principles of logic or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.

Certificates and Licenses:

Current State of Texas Medical License. Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certified. Current DEA and Texas DPS licenses. Board Certified or eligible in Psychiatry.

Computer Skills:

Demonstrate working knowledge of the Internet, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and electronic health records software.

Other:

Ability to drive and have access to a car; maintain valid driver’s license and auto liability insurance.

While performing the duties of this job, the team member is exposed to a medical office environment having direct contact with patients and clients. Position necessitates bending, stooping, twisting, turning, walking, climbing step stools, sitting and standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift and maneuver 15 pounds.
