GAS UTILITY WORKER

POSITION TITLE: Gas Utility Worker (Two)

RECRUITMENT DATES: January 2 – 16, 2025

SALARY: $15.00 (Minimum)

JOB TYPE: Full-Time, Non-Exempt

LOCATION: Canton Municipal Utilities (CMU)

Install, repair, and maintain mechanical regulating and controlling devices, such as gas meters, gas regulators, thermostats, safety and flow valves, and other mechanical governors. Ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to Canton Municipal Utility customers. Canton Municipal Utilities is responsible for all aspects of gas distribution and operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response. This is an entry level position. Work is predominately outdoors and in all weather conditions.

THE ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Install plastic gas distribution lines
• Repair leaks on gas distribution systems
• Operates trenching, excavation, and polyethylene fusion equipment
• Assists in gas line leak detection
• Tapping mains
• Gas meter installation
• Performs semi-skilled work assisting a higher classified employee.
• Must be able to read and comply with all required company standards and procedures.
• Follow the direction of their crew lead and/or supervisor at all times.
• Operate light duty trucks and associated trailers.
• With adequate training and under direction of a Crew Leader, may be required to: use hand tools, portable power tools, pavement breakers, spaders, tampers or compactors for work not requiring precision; perform pipe wrapping duties.
• Must work in a team environment
• May be required to perform traffic control functions under the direction of a Gas Crew Leader.
• To better represent the community we serve within a timely manner, applicants who live within 30 minutes of Canton Municipal Utilities
• Other duties as assigned by the Manager

Working Environment:

• Outdoors in varying weather conditions. Frequent exposure to noise, heat, dust, and/or potentially hazardous conditions. Must regularly lift, move, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend over and crawl.
• May be required to work weekends, nights and holidays; on call duty after normal business hours is required.
• Must be willing and able to work overtime as required.
• Required to be On Call Duty rotation. Must be able to arrive in the service area within 30 minutes.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

• Outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, gases, vibrations and all types of weather and temperature conditions
• Incumbent requires sufficient mobility to work in a field environment; walk, stand, sit for long periods of time; frequent stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach and twist; push, pull. Lift, sometimes in confined spaces; wear protective apparel and able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds
• Ability to verbally communicate to exchange information

Equipment Used:

• Trencher
• Backhoe and or mini excavator
• Polyethylene fusion equipment
• Rig

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent
• Previous experience (2 years work experience preferred) in construction such as Underground Utility, Trenching Equipment, Welding, Carpentry, Plumbing, Pipefitting, Landscaping, etc.
• Valid MS driver’s license with good record

Must be able to pass drug test, and criminal background check
