The Missoula County Attorney's Office is seeking a VICTIM WITNESS COORDINATOR to join their team. This position provides support and liaison services to victims and witnesses for the County Attorney’s Office. Coordinates hearing and legal arrangements; and communicates with crime victims, their advocates and witnesses on behalf of the County Attorney’s office.

Representative Examples of Work

Contacts victims and witnesses of crimes, explains the County Attorney’s Office role and procedures, provides referral to the Crime Victim Advocate Program for advocacy and support services. Answers questions and explains the legal and judicial system processes and procedures to victims and witnesses as their case moves through the legal and court systems. Maintains contact with victims, their advocates, and witnesses to provide them with information. Attends pretrial interviews, judicial hearings and trials, as needed, in order to provide victims and witnesses with information during such sessions and provide support as needed. Schedules interviews with victims, their advocates, witnesses, prosecution, and defense. Provides victims and witnesses with information concerning court hearings, and serves as liaison between the victim, Crime Victim Advocates, and the County’s prosecuting attorney. Explains Youth Court Act to victims of juvenile offenders. Contacts witnesses and assists in coordination of interviews and testimony for the Dependent Neglect Unit. Prepares and mails or emails subpoenas and provides appearance information to advocates and witnesses in criminal and dependent neglect cases; provides employer intercession services for witnesses when requested; resolves appearance issues to ensure out-of-town victims and witnesses appear in court. Provides criminal justice agency partners (i.e., law enforcement, advocates, etc.) status updates regarding ongoing cases (i.e., charging decisions for pending cases, continuances, etc.). Assists County Attorney’s Office staff and law enforcement in gathering and presenting information from victims as to restitution requested. Provides the prosecuting attorney with impressions and opinions concerning the strength of the case and the victims and witnesses, strategy and planning. Maintains accurate documentation, records, case notes, and files on each case; and prepares materials for assigned attorneys as necessary. Assists attorneys and paralegals in making sure the witness list is up to date, which may include reviewing files to ensure that all witnesses have been noticed. Participates in local interagency networks including social service agencies, law enforcement agencies, and community organizations providing a coordinated community response to victims of crime. Attends training meetings, conferences, and workshops as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree. Degrees best suited for this position include criminology, sociology, psychology, and social work.
  • Requires two years of experience working in the criminal justice system or providing victim and witness assistance.
  • Must pass an extensive driving history and criminal background investigation.

Physical/Environmental Demands

The work is primarily performed in an office setting but involves frequent visits to city and county offices. The work involves contact with people who have experienced violence creating the potential for significant emotional stress for the employee and possible exposure to violent incidents.
