Maintenance Technician
FLSA Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt
Scheduled Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm; On-call evenings and weekends
Pay Rate: $20.00 per hour

Reports to: Senior Property Director / Senior Maintenance Technician
POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary function of the Maintenance Technician position is to be a team player assisting with upkeep of all Monroe County YMCA facilities. Communicate regularly with the Senior Maintenance Technician the needs of each facility. Consistently display a positive and enthusiastic approach to the performance of the assigned duties and the goals and philosophies of the YMCA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The first priority for this maintenance position is to operate and maintain the YMCA pools and hot tubs at both locations. Operating a commercial pool requires a set of skills and qualifications to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all users.
- Certifications:
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO): Essential certification covering pool maintenance, water chemistry, safety, and regulations. CPO Certification is a requirement to maintain your position at the YMCA. The YMCA will compensate for the training course. (The course is heavy on math and chemistry.)
- First Aid and CPR: Proficiency in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to respond to emergencies. YMCA will provide training.
- Experience:
- Prior experience in pool operation and maintenance preferred.
- Knowledge of pool equipment operation and maintenance.
- Knowledge:
- Understanding of pool chemistry and water treatment.
- Familiarity with local health and safety regulations regarding pool operation.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and ability to respond quickly and effectively to incidents.
- Skills:
- Strong communication skills to interact with pool patrons and staff.
- Attention to detail for regular pool maintenance tasks.
- Problem-solving abilities to address equipment malfunctions or water quality issues.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical fitness for tasks such as lifting, cleaning, and conducting pool inspections.
- Responsibilities:
- Monitor pool water quality and chemistry, adjusting chemical levels as needed.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning filters, backwashing systems, vacuuming pool surfaces and cleaning pool decks and surrounding areas.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, including maintaining appropriate signage and safety equipment.
- Respond promptly to emergencies and provide assistance as needed.
- Keep accurate records of pool maintenance activities, chemical levels, and incident reports.
- Availability:
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays for emergency service.

- Commitment to staying updated on industry best practices, safety guidelines, and regulatory changes through ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
The secondary priority for this maintenance position after pool maintenance is completed is to complete work orders, including:
- The ability to repair wellness equipment: through tech support, advice from fellow staff and research, make minor electrical, carpentry, and plumbing repairs.
- Do a visual inspection of the building; evaluate facility to insure effective and efficient operations. Identify and recommend any corrective actions to the Senior Maintenance Technician.
- Monitor and report any unusaual environmental temperatures of the buildings to the Senior Property Director.
- Responsible for the upkeep of all YMCA grounds. Main activities include mowing, trimming, pruning, watering of grounds and plants. Police the parking lot, barn storage, shelters, bus stop, outdoor restrooms and playgrounds. Pick up trash, shovel snow, rake leaves, clean walks, drives and grounds adjacent to building.
- Ability to perform duties calling for frequent medium to heavy lifting (up to 80 lbs), moving and climbing ladders.
- Perform housekeeping duties as they arise.
- Responsible to wear protective equipment according to requirements of job taking place.
- Work independently on small projects inside and outside buildings while managing time and resources. Ability to lead staff and volunteers when presented with helpers.
- Maintain all tools and equipment in proper working order, tracking repairs and preventative maintenance measures completed. Store tools and equipment and maintain work and storage spaces in a clean and organized fashion.
- Complete electronic work orders and update any tracking spreadsheets for problems and/or equipment repairs.
- Have flexibility to meet the needs of any special events, weekend responsibilities. Participate in weekend maintenance oncall rotation. Respond to phone calls and requests for service as they occur.
- Attend all mandatory department meetings.
- Have basic written, computer and verbal skills to communicate statuses.
- Be familiar with the many phases of maintenance and cleaning in order to effectively communicate to staff in a professional manner.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High school education
- Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing and carpentry skills
- Mechanical and carpentry skills with capability of working with tools and equipment
- Ability to become CPO certified
- Attention to detail
- Good communication skills
- General cleaning skills
- Ability to read labels and directions
- Flexible schedule
- A valid driver’s license
