What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Personal Lines Underwriter position at N&D?
Responsibilities:
- Builds and maintains strong agency relationships with excellent oral and written communication skills
- Works alongside Marketing Team to ensure proper training of agents on company guidelines and systems
- Leads by example to promotes positive relationships with the underwriting team, other departments, and external parties
- Reviews new and renewal business in all personal lines received from a specific group of agents to determine acceptability of risks according to Norfolk & Dedham’s standards and objectives. Refers risks in excess of authority to supervisor for acceptance or rejection.
- Makes sure that all required information is provided. Fills in data on incomplete applications or determines material needing research.
- Checks items such as adequacy of coverage, type and location of risk, age and condition of property. Calls for inspections, audit reports or further information from agents to verify conditions affecting degree of risk. Evaluates information.
- Reviews binders, accepting or rejecting, or refers to supervisor and notifies agents of decision.
- Reviews endorsements for acceptability, accuracy and appropriate premium adjustments. Resolves questionable endorsements with appropriate individuals.
- Reviews Questionable Risk reports from Claims Department for their impact on renewals, details of coverage, etc. May act on Examiners recommendations within Company and regulatory guidelines, consulting with supervisor on questionable cases.
- May institute legal notices for cancellation and subsequent reinstatement, if warranted, with notification to agents.
- Reviews non-automated policies for renewal or cancellation exception.
- Periodically reviews an agent’s book of business at random and makes recommendations for general or non-renewal of specific policies in accordance with established guidelines.
- Corresponds by email and telephone with agents on a regular basis on personal lines underwriting and rating matters. Obtains requested information and resolves problems within scope of authority. Periodically visits agency offices to meet agents and their staffs in order to develop and maintain good working relationships.
- Performs related work as required.
- Develops and manages a personal lines book of business within assigned territory or agency grouping to meet organizational objectives for profitability, growth, and retention
- Demonstrates in depth knowledge in personal lines products, coverages, rating methodology, and systems and assists in developing knowledge in others on the team
- Evaluates risk characteristics and analyzes historic and potential account performance to make sound underwriting decisions that are properly documented in the file
- Uses established practices, procedures and authority level to issue, review, modify, and renew policies and accounts with superior process efficiency
- Makes decisions independently within authority level and provides detailed assessment and recommendation to manager for risks outside established authority
- Applies knowledge and judgement to proactively help solve problems of various complexity
- Stays up-to-date on competitive marketplace and is a conduit of information
- Leads special projects throughout the year
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of Personal Lines Underwriting experience may substitute for the desirable education requirements
- Minimum of CPCU or alternative designation program approved by Manager
- 4 years’ experience in insurance
- At least 2 years’ experience as an Underwriter, including exposure to all Personal Lines Underwriting
- Knowledge of insurance laws, practices and regulations,
- Ability to evaluate applications to exercise objective judgement in making good underwriting decisions and identify pertinent information
- Ability to deal effectively and efficiently with agents
- Demonstrated ability to excel in the rapidly changing environment of insurance underwriting
- Advanced analytical abilities and desire to proactively identify and solve problems
- Excellent time management and relationship building skills
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Energetic and willing to be part of the team
