To prepare the reports, USGS specialists collect and analyze exploration, production, and trade data for metals, industrial minerals, and mineral fuels. The reports provide valuable information to assist in the analysis of the availability and trade of mineral commodities for the U.S. and global economies and are also useful for the estimation of future production for different commodities from individual states, countries, regions, and the global market.

Akima Systems Engineering is looking for an employee to support with knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially data handling and analysis within Excel) as well as with practical, real-world experience with digital GIS software, database structure and a geographic/cartographic research ability. The objectives are to normalize existing data sources and to run comparison analysis to create and maintain a comprehensive domestic and global mineral facility database. The employee must be able to analyze facility-level information pertaining to the mineral and extractive industries and verify information through research.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Using established protocols/methods/automated processes to format and normalize data according to USGS and NMIC data management standards.

  • Update data holdings for assigned mineral commodities and countries and review the work of colleagues for accuracy and completeness. May be responsible for updating approximately 5,000 to10,000 records of data over the course of several months.
  • Locate the mineral sites the contractor will be using publicly available sources, including company annual reports, mineral industry web sites, existing non-proprietary datasets from the USGS and other leading organizations, as well as consultation with NMIC's expert staff of mineral, state, and country specialists.

Additional tasks may include assisting with:

  • The creation of digital, interactive maps, following data normalization and database creation. These types of maps will be useful in completing global projects showing domestic and international mining and production of mineral commodities as well as the analysis of the distribution of mineral resources.
  • The planning of technical, economic, and statistical studies of mineral resources to cover the social, political, environmental, and economic problems affecting minerals and related industries through the compilation and analysis of data from multiple sources for the preparation of technical reports.
  • The monitoring and evaluation of information and data for reliability and potential impact on mineral industries associated with one or multiple mineral commodities.
  • Additionally compiling and analyzing mineral commodity data for participation in meetings or to give presentations on research methodology or components of a study as requested by GMAS management in support of special project assignments or participate in other research in support of the NMIC’s activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • College degree (Bachelor's degree required), including coursework in geographic information systems.
  • Experience handling large datasets or databases, geospatial and/or non-geospatial, with an emphasis on researching and collecting large amounts of data in a standardized framework.
  • Experience with scientific and technical terminology of geology, economic geology, and mineral commodities highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in using ARC-GIS, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Illustrator.
  • Minimum 1 year directly related experience.
