Nitrex has been a leading international metal heat treating company, serving the Chicago area for over 35 years. Our Chicago Plant is seeking a dependable and enthusiastic candidate to work in our MET lab.
Our lab technicians are responsible for preparation and metallographic examination of samples. Lab technicians provide quality assurance to our customers, so attention to detail is paramount for this position. Lab technicians must be able to analyze specimens for accuracy and interpret information from worksheets, order specifications, blueprints/engineering drawings, production management software, and other written or verbal instructions to accomplish work assignments.

We are offering this position for Second shift or Third Shift
Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities
- Examine test samples to determine their physical properties including making metallurgical mounts, polishing, and etching metal specimens
- Conduct routine hardness test by using Rockwell hardness test, Automatic micro hardness tester and microscopic examination of metals and alloys to determine their characteristics
- Ensure acceptance and qualification tests are conducted in accordance with customer specifications and engineering drawings
- Microscopically investigate the surfaces and measure surface layers or grain sizes
- Setting up, operating, and maintaining laboratory equipment per required procedures
- Complying with all state and company regulations
- Perform QMS and EMS Internal Audits as per ISO/TS16949 and EMS14001
- Perform daily calibrations and carbon checks
Position Requirements
- Minimum of high school diploma
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings and specifications
- At least 1 year experience in preparing Test Specimen/Coupons (preferred)
- Must demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn
- Must have a basic understanding of math and chemistry
- Must pay attention to detail
- May be asked to work extended hours and/or weekends on occasion
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree with experience working in Quality
- Quality, Material science, Mechanical Engineering, or metallurgy background
- Technical understanding of Heat-Treating processes
- Knowledge of material characteristics, destructive and non-destructive test methods, and measuring techniques
- Experience with sample preparation machinery and test equipment in lab
- Familiarity with safety standards/product liability
- ISO Internal Quality/Environmental Auditing experience
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $19.50 - $24.00 per hour
Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
