What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Lab Technician position at NOR-LEA GENERAL HOSPITAL INC?
This position is responsible for specimen collection and performing laboratory high complexity laboratory testing in an accurate and timely manner. Personnel report to department Coordinator or Manager.
- Demonstrates competence as Phlebotomy Technician. Including providing excellent customer service, proper specimen requirements/collection, processing and transport of specimens.
- Demonstrates competence and ensures acceptable performance in analyzer functionality, test analysis, slide technique, quality control, analyzer-calibration, maintenance, and for reporting test results, including critical values. Knows how to properly take action when results are abnormal or not within the acceptable limits.
- Demonstrates competence and ensures acceptable performance in slide techniques, cell identification and other microscopic identifications and reporting of results. Knows what to do when abnormal cells or other abnormal findings are identified. Refer abnormal findings to Lab Scientist, Coordinator or Manager.
- Demonstrates competence in organism identification, distinguishing between pathogens and organisms belonging t normal flora and proper performance of sensitivities on pathogens identified. Refer abnormal findings to Lab Scientist, Coordinator or Manager.
- Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test analysis and basic troubleshooting. Must perform corrective actions or assure patient testing is not performed and referred unless systems are properly functioning and meeting specifications. Refer unresolved problems to Lab Scientist, Coordinator or Manager
- Monitors inventory of testing supplies in designated area. Recognizes and provides input for opportunities for improvements in financial performance and productivity.

Education
Must qualify as high complexity testing personnel by CLIS 42CFR493.1489-b. Usually obtained by an Associate Degree in
Biological, Chemical or Medical-Laboratory Sciences or and Associate Degree that includes 60 semester hours, of which 24
semester hours are in biological, physics and chemical sciences, including 6 semester hours in chemistry and 6 in biology.
Lab Technician requires 8 hours of CE annually
