Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Production Manager, the Repack Room Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily production activities for the Northern Illinois Food Bank from the Repack Room. Primary programmatic activities for the position include the following:

• Working with Production Management to oversee production functions for the Northern Illinois Food Bank Repack Room as well as other repacking activities wherein frozen or temperature controlled bulk food items are packaged into shipping units for distribution.
• Management of the Production and Volunteer fulfillment functions in the Repack Room to reach and/or exceed the goal of 40,000 lbs /month repackaged from that room.

To accomplish this work, the Repack Room Supervisor actively engages volunteers and creates a welcoming and safe experience and is responsible for training, scheduling, and supervising Volunteer Supervisors and production volunteers while creating a unique and fun environment that is mission driven.

Duties and Responsibilities 

• Responsible for managing and organizing the workloads of the Volunteers and building relationships with Volunteer Supervisors/Volunteer Groups specifically based on time and/or volume of activities in the Repack Room.
• Directs daily activities of direct reports to accomplish Northern Illinois Food Bank production, and sorting goals in the Repack Room.
• A leader in maintaining a clean, sanitized and tested work room dedicated to a food-safe atmosphere.
• Works collaboratively with other Northern Illinois Food Bank to educate and maintain certifications in anything pertinent to the Repack Room.
• Upholds all Northern Illinois Food Bank safety policies and procedures and ensures that volunteers are trained on all safety procedures prior to the start of a production.
• Ensures that Volunteer Members are communicated information about the Northern Illinois Food Bank mission, as well as debrief sessions at the end of runs to communicate results.
• Assigns tasks to volunteers in preparing packaging supplies, opening cased food items, and the final creation of finished food bags or boxes. 
• Manages inventory of production line supplies (box cutters, tape dispensers, tape, markers, pallets, bin bases/caps, sidewalls, bags, etc.) and places orders as needed.
• Maintains sufficient quantities of personal protective equipment (PPE) to support production runs.
• Ensures use of all inventory food items per FIFO procedures.
• Ensures compliance with all government standards for food products, include storage, disposal and inventory.
• Work with the Production Team Manager on budget and track costs of goods used in the room.
• Ensures compliance with all recall and food safety standards in all areas of food sorting operations.
• Performs scheduled inventories alongside Production and sorting supplies and food items and works with the Inventory staff to achieve the goal of zero inventory variance for the Production department.
• Maintains cleanliness of Bulk Repack equipment and work area in compliance with all health codes and standards applicable to food acquisition, storage and distribution, including AIB processes and procedures.
• Recycles cardboard, plastic, wood, shrink wrap and paper per Northern Illinois Food Bank standards.  
• Ensures that volunteers and staff are wearing proper PPE to protect themselves and our clients.
• Responsible for assisting the Production Manager with CERES transactions as needed, including but not limited to pallet tags, item re-class and trash adjustments as needed.
• Works with the Production Manager to enter finished goods product data from Repack Room production into CERES and logs data into the finished product log book to maintain product traceability in line with recall guidelines.
• Completes daily tasks in compliance with Northern Illinois Food Bank Food Safety and Handling Procedures.
• Participates in department and organizational meetings as required.
• Follows guidelines provided in the Operations Procedure Manual.
• Responsible for maintaining accurate records and generating reports to document and measure key aspects of the position’s job responsibilities and assists with providing data and metrics information to facilitate the evaluation of operational activities of the food bank.
• Works collaboratively with all food bank teams to support Northern Illinois Food Bank’s Strategic Goals and Initiatives including Procurement to ensure product flow.
• Upholds food safety procedures and supports product traceability and recalls as needed and provides support to Operations senior leadership in maintaining all AIB Food Safety Standards and recordkeeping to ensure that Operations is 100% AIB audit ready at all times.

Qualifications

• The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s degree or acceptable equivalent industry experience. Some college or college degree preferred. 
• Self-starter and team player with the ability to work independently and effectively. 
• Ability to direct work activity with volunteers and community service volunteers.
• Possess the ability to learn inventory systems and work with the Volunteer Department to formulate necessary weekly reporting to the Production Manager and Director of Operations.
• Able to work effectively with minimal supervision and in a team environment.
• Excellent customer service, organization, planning, communication, and public relations skills.
• Possess a high level of interpersonal skills to interact professionally with the public and work effectively with others.
• Experience in general warehouse duties and operation of warehouse equipment, forklift and electric pallet jack required.
• Able to comfortably lift and move up to 50 pounds and stand for long period of times.
• Ability to become forklift and electric pallet jack certified within 60 days.
• Ability to pass food safety certification requirements within first 60 days.
• Proficient in Microsoft Suite of programs and Internet based communications.
• For insurance purposes, must be at least 18 years of age, possess a current and valid Illinois Driver License, and hold a safe and clean driving record.

Additional Information

• The starting salary range for this position [$ ], based on skills and experience.
• This position’s working schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Weekends might be required.
• This position is based out of our West Surburban Center (Geneva), location.
• Some local travel required. Must have dependable transportation and ability and flexibility to drive long distances(e.g., to Rockford, IL), as needed.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position supervises the West Suburban Repackaging Room and all Repackaging team members and Repack production projects.

Work Environment

This job operates in both an office and a warehouse environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines as well as warehouse equipment such as forklifts, Reach-trucks, Electric and Manual pallet movers.

• Subject to both environmental conditions; activities occur inside and outside.
• Subject to extreme cold; temperatures typically below 32 for periods of more than one hour. 
• Subject to extreme heat; temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour. 
• Subject to noise; there is sufficient noise to cause the need to shout in order to be heard above ambient noise level.
• Subject to hazards; includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on high places and exposure to high heat.
• Required to function in narrow aisles.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a forklift, as well as a lot of standing, walking, bending and stooping. This is a physical job. Capable of consistently lifting 50 pounds.
