TITLE:                             EDUCATIONAL Translator

 

CLASSIFICATION:        EDUCATIONAL Translator

                                                 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Apply interpreting, English translating and/or other communication interpreting in the educational environment to ensure access to information and maximum learning between students/parents, who primarily speak a language other than English, and faculty, staff, and other students.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

 

The levels of Interpreter are distinguished by both the level of comfort, skill, and knowledge in service delivery and encouraging effective communication and interaction in the educational setting.  The Translator serves in a supportive capacity in the classroom.  The Translator clearly interprets all communication.  The Translator functions in strong coordination and leadership with teachers and school staff to ensure achieved intent of instruction.

 

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

  1. Attend and interpret the educational environment including but not limited to:
  • Classrooms
  • Laboratories
  • Field Trips
  • Assemblies
  • Sport Practices / Competitions
  • School-Sponsored Extra-Curricular Activities
  • Meetings / Conferences
  • Graduation Ceremonies
  • All other Educational Opportunities Provided to Students.
  1. Allow non English speaking students to communicate with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and others. 
  1. Utilize planning time to meet with teachers and staff as deemed appropriate by the educational team and/or supervisors. 
  1. Prepare for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting and/or transliterating.
  1. Serve as a professional member of the educational team in the Admission and Release Committee (ARC) process; and
  1. Perform other duties as assigned that do not interfere with the communication accessibility of assigned student (s).  

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

                KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

  1. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. 
  1. Kentucky Core Content and Program of Studies. 
  1. Applicable sections of the law, including Kentucky Administrative Regulations. 
  1. Special Education, language development of, and effective strategies for educating students with hearing loss.

            ABILITY TO:

 

  1. Interpret from spoken English to the IEP specified modality (Spanish, etc.) and from the IEP specified modality to spoken English/Spanish.
  1. Implement knowledge of the field of interpreting.
  1. Relate well to non English speaking individuals.
  1. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  1. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  1. Provide instructional staff with relevant information regarding student’s functional abilities in the classroom.
  1. Communicate effectively orally, in writing and across the continuum.
  1. Work independently with little direction; and
  1. Maintain current knowledge of school rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; and
  • Some experience interpreting in an educational setting or working in the ELL community with supporting documentation preferred.

OR

  • Graduation from an Interpreter/Translating Training Program (ITP) may be accepted.
