Description:

Oliver Winery, the 29th largest winery in the U.S., is looking for a talented Enologist/Lab Technician to join our winemaking team.

The person will work under the direction of Senior Winemaking within the Winemaking Department with a focus on wine quality. This is position consists of chemical and sensory analysis and research, general support of Senior Winemaking, and a focus on wine health throughout the winemaking process. As the Enologist/Lab Technician, this position is responsible for the timely completion of analysis, organization of the lab, and record keeping. This position will work closely with the cellar team to improve operations and wine quality. Attention to detail, ability to follow procedure, and desire for accuracy and precision is critical to the success of this position. All aspects of this position support the assurance of making world class wines through ensuring quality specifications are met throughout the winemaking process.

  • Assist Winemaking team in maintaining quality programs including, fermentation monitoring, barrel program, SO2 program, ATP testing, turbidity, DO and other analysis as directed.
  • Wine Quality Control: Conduct routine analysis of wine, juice, and grapes including titrations, density, pH measurement, dissolved oxygen, tank inspections and process inspections.
  • Assist Winemaking team in ensuring all weekly and pre-bottling analysis are completed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with Senior Winemaking and QC Specialist to onboard, maintain, and troubleshoot all lab equipment.
  • Responsible for the organization of lab and records including, lab analysis, Cellar ATP records, sensory analysis, calibrations, manuals, and weekly checks.
  • Report analysis in a timely manner to winemaking team with recommendations.
  • Maintain up-to-date records on all wines in production including CFR records.
  • Input wine chemistry and other test results into Crafted/ERP software.
  • Write cellar orders and chemical additions under direction of winemaking in Crafted/ERP software.
  • Order and maintain inventory of all laboratory supplies.
  • In coordination with QC Specialist, responsible for the cleanliness and 5s organization of analytical and sensory labs.
  • Weekly inspection of production areas and tanks
  • Identify issues and propose solutions for cellar operations to produce the highest quality wine.
  • Participate in tastings for wine quality, analysis, and treatments.
  • Assist in training of new employees as directed.
  • Clean and organize all lab equipment including glassware daily.
  • Perform routine calibrations of analytical equipment.
  • Fill in for QC Specialist or other Winemaking staff when directed by Senior Winemaking.
  • Additional duties, as assigned by management
Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, related science (Enology), or other equivalent experience.
  • Experience in a lab environment and strong knowledge in enological process and wine chemistry
  • Strong understanding of cellar equipment, techniques and processes
  • An interest in wine.
  • Ability to observe and distinguish subtle differences in data, color, aroma, etc.
  • Due to the nature of our business, must be over 21 years of age.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT: This is a physical job in a winery/production setting that will require long periods of standing, walking, lifting, climbing ladders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision.
