The Orange County Solid Waste Management Department openings for two Solid Waste Collector Drivers. The work involves the responsibility for collecting and transporting solid waste and/or recyclable materials from Solid Waste staging areas to processing facilities using semi-trucks and tractor-trailers.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a Unit Supervisor with some leeway to exercise independent judgment within the framework of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the performance of duties. Does related work as required.
This classification requires a CDL Class A driver’s license.

Collects and transports solid waste, bulky waste, and recyclables from convenience centers and specified locations to processing facilities using heavy equipment, semi-trucks and tractor-trailers that require a CDL Class A license.
Inspects the truck prior to leaving on route to ensure that it is properly cleaned, serviced, and fueled.
Performs routine maintenance on the truck such as greasing the lifts, checking the tire pressure, and checking fluid levels.
Completes equipment repair requests as necessary.
Washes and cleans the truck on a regular basis.
Completes daily route sheets, landfill tickets and other required paperwork.
Uses Personalized Protection Equipment (PPE) as required.
Adheres to the department’s safety rules and regulations.
Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments.

FULL PERFORMANCE OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the operation of semi-trucks, long-haul tractor trailers and heavy equipment requiring a CDL Class A license and demonstrated skill with using those vehicles and equipment.
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices, and the ability to apply these practices to assigned work.
Good knowledge of State and County laws, regulations and standards governing tractor trailer operations.
Good knowledge of the geography and road system of the county, and of collection and distribution routes.
Skill in the basic maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment.
Skill in defensive driving techniques.
Skill in using various hand and power tools.
Ability to demonstrate sound judgment, integrity, resourcefulness, accuracy, thoroughness and the physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to work independently in the performance of regular duties.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, government regulations and procedures manuals.
Ability to complete routine paperwork evaluation after completing a task.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) test equivalency AND one (1) year of related experience in the operation of large over the road trucks with trailers; hauling waste material, recycling commodities and other related material.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) issued by the State of North Carolina.
All offers of employment are conditioned upon successful clearance of the FMCSA Clearinghouse and pre-employment drug testing. Employment cannot commence until the employee has been cleared.
